No show this week, though I’ve been busy hunting for more great local music to showcase. Watch the music page for updates. It was a short week, anyway, and I think three shows a month that is, taking a periodic break feels like a good pace to keep for this podcast. For those who are hungry for any little byte of the islands, be sure to check out my videoblog. Like HawaiiUP, it’s as much personal as it is local, and I’ve enjoyed playing with video when my audio mojo fizzles.
HiUP #13 – From Crosswalks to Highways
Show number thirteen kicks off the long Memorial Day weekend. Featured music includes a Hawaiian band in California, and a local artist who’s returned to the islands. The season finale of ABC’s “Lost” brings us our last “LostCast” for a while, and I have a quick chat with the biggest road geek I know.

HiUP #12 – Pink Slime and Punk Rock
Show number twelve slides in a bit late, after the wife is sidelined with ‘walking pneumonia.’ She’s a trooper, though, and still checks in for more ‘Lost’ talk. Two bands are featured this week, one of which providing our new HawaiiUP theme song. We also hear from a globe-trotting podcaster and videoblogger… as well as a toddler.

HiUP #11 – Too Much
Episode eleven brings some cool podcasting news, some R&B from an island “Idol,” talk of military bases and mass transit, Jen tackles toons, and I review the answers to last show’s quiz. Congratulations to Mel, our winner! Be forewarned, this show goes long — very long — and the last ten minutes are nearly incoherent. If only I had a guy in a control booth to make frantic “cut” signals at me. Stick around, though, if you want to know more than anyone needs to know about my convoluted political outlook.

HiUP #10 – Spam Sure Beats Car Salesmen
Episode ten carries HawaiiUP across an arbitrary but satisfying milestone. I celebrate with a little contest, but only after blowing the festive mood with a long, indulgent rant about a local car dealer. I make up for it, though, with a song Jen picked out just for you, and with a tour through an “only in Hawaii” festival in Waikiki.

UARC at UH, Taro Pie at McDonald’s, Jeremy’s Book Bust, Used Car Shopping - 18:40 “Ku`u Aloha” from Pali by Pali

HiUP #09 – In-Laws In, Far Out
After a week off, HawaiiUP returns with show number nine. The politics of schools and ships, corrupting young minds, sounds from a store, Hollywood movies and local podcasters. Music by a student who proclaims, “My music is more personal than my underwear,” and a duet of sorts performed by my kids.
In this show:

Pause
No, you didn’t miss anything… there was no HawaiiUP show for the week of April 18-22, on account of illness, in-laws, and a… labor dispute with one of my regular guests. On the upside, I’ve added a streaming MP3 player to the site so those of you avoiding the “podcasting” thing can still listen without committing to a download. Let me know what you think!
HiUP #08 – Volcanoes and Guitars
Show number eight dedicated to fellow survivors of tax day. A two-song special, featuring a pair of local girls, and an award-winning virtuoso. A few headlines, a recap of our family trip to the Big Island, a blank audio postcard from atop a volcano, and Jen discloses her love of cheesy music and bad movies. The geek talk promised never materialized, so watch out next time.

HiUP #07 – Heard Not Seen
Show number seven, again starting off looking a little short but ending up a full half hour and change. I cover stupid crimes and follow up on some earlier stories, then both my daughter Katie and my son Zac get into the act. After a relaxing minute or two on the beach, and some great music, Jen and I tackle “Lost” once again. Finally, I ramble about videoblogging, which you’ll be glad to hear I’m not planning on doing very often.

HiUP #06 – Mass and Masses Media
Show number six, pulled together almost entirely during an afternoon commute (a la TheCommute) between Honolulu and Mililani. This episode features an unusually longwinded analysis of local crime, a tale of a strong-stomached good samaritan, a snippet of Easter Mass, a truly local musician, movie talk, and podcasting talk.
