HiUP #13 – From Crosswalks to Highways

Friday, May 27th, 2005

Show number thirteen kicks off the long Memorial Day weekend. Featured music includes a Hawaiian band in California, and a local artist who’s returned to the islands. The season finale of ABC’s “Lost” brings us our last “LostCast” for a while, and I have a quick chat with the biggest road geek I know.

In this show:

  • 01:00 HawaiiUP Menu
  • 01:40 HawaiiUP Headlines:
Pedestrians and Crosswalks, Grafitti on Kauai, Dr. Beach
  • 14:40 “Brand New Day” from The New Voyage by Island Riddim
  • 19:03 The Pith of Pop – The Podcast Edition:
    Season Finale of ABC’s “Lost”
  • 25:36 Oscar Voss of HawaiiHighways.com
  • 33:25 “Palimony” by Stubborn Boogie

HiUP #12 – Pink Slime and Punk Rock

Sunday, May 22nd, 2005

Show number twelve slides in a bit late, after the wife is sidelined with ‘walking pneumonia.’ She’s a trooper, though, and still checks in for more ‘Lost’ talk. Two bands are featured this week, one of which providing our new HawaiiUP theme song. We also hear from a globe-trotting podcaster and videoblogger… as well as a toddler.

Some of the events mentioned in this episode are also featured in my videoblog. Special thanks to Akamai Brain Collective for providing our theme song. Here’s the Coral cache link, and here’s the cut-and-paste URL to the local file:

HiUP #11 – Too Much

Friday, May 13th, 2005

Episode eleven brings some cool podcasting news, some R&B from an island “Idol,” talk of military bases and mass transit, Jen tackles toons, and I review the answers to last show’s quiz. Congratulations to Mel, our winner! Be forewarned, this show goes long — very long — and the last ten minutes are nearly incoherent. If only I had a guy in a control booth to make frantic “cut” signals at me. Stick around, though, if you want to know more than anyone needs to know about my convoluted political outlook.

In this show:

  • 00:00 HawaiiUP Menu
  • 00:00 HawaiiUP Headlines:
Military Base Closures, Taxes for Transit
  • 00:00 “I’m Going To Love You Anyway” from Jordan by Jordan Segundo
  • 00:00 The Pith of Pop – The Podcast Edition:
    Top Five Animated Television Shows
  • 00:00 Podcasting Announcement
    Podcasting: Do It Yourself Guide
  • 00:00 HawaiiUP Quiz Answers
  • 00:00 Really Long Answer to a Short Question

HiUP #10 – Spam Sure Beats Car Salesmen

Friday, May 6th, 2005

Episode ten carries HawaiiUP across an arbitrary but satisfying milestone. I celebrate with a little contest, but only after blowing the festive mood with a long, indulgent rant about a local car dealer. I make up for it, though, with a song Jen picked out just for you, and with a tour through an “only in Hawaii” festival in Waikiki.

In this show:

  • 00:40 HawaiiUP Menu
  • 01:06 HawaiiUP Headlines:
UARC at UH, Taro Pie at McDonald’s, Jeremy’s Book Bust, Used Car Shopping
  • 18:40 “Ku`u Aloha” from Pali by Pali
  • 22:45 The Pith of Pop – The Podcast Edition:
    “Lost” on ABC
  • 27:50 Waikiki Spam Jam
  • 32:50 HawaiiUP Quiz Contest

Here’s the Coral cache link, and here’s the local file.
