“While Locke devises a new strategy, Jack’s group searches for Desmond.” For this penultimate episode of “LOST,” we’re posting a “shortwave transmission,” a shorter, initial reactions podcast, rather than our usual blog entry. We skip the recap and get straight to our take, then share the first few calls to come in on the LOSTLine. Although we’re less than a week away from the end of this incredible series, we’d still love your feedback on “What They Died For.” Please comment below and join the conversation!

  1. MLE in Colorado says:

Coolpeace!!! you were #500!!!!!! Now see? that wasn’t so hard…you should win a prize for that!!!

  2. MLE in Colorado says:

@Tori- love the Wizard of Oz post- those are my favorite analogies and when I have called in – its usually to point those out…Love it.

@ Carol from Boston when you wrote: “Rousseau’s message “it killed them all” at the time we thought it was the monster, but now we know it was the infection and her that killed them. I also had a revelation, the “infection” was just the MIB manipulating them into killing her because she was a candidate and he couldn’t do it himself.”
I totally agree- I think that Rousseau was a candidiate and that is how she survived and that MIB needed her husband to kill her because he couldn’t. I always thought she survived because Ben couldn’t kill his daughter’s mother- but I think there was more to it than that.

  3. MLE in Colorado says:

By the way- my son showed me this video yesterday- which is so great…and you can see how many things they DID answer this season..but also how many things are still not answered…until tonight! This is very funny…maybe many of you have seen it…but if not its a great recap of the Islands best questions.

  4. Carol from Boston says:

@MLE – I remember from pictures her name was on the list of candidates.

I am only coming on this site or the transmission facebook page for Lost stuff today. I trust all of you to be spoiler free.

  5. LReene says:

@MLE in Colorado – Such a cool video! Thanks so much for posting it.

@YAE – The video contains no spoilers, so if you want something to do for a bit while waiting, check it out. It’s GOOD!!

  6. aaron r says:

@Carol from Boston- i can understand. can you lock them all in the garage? if not, a motel room might be the ticket.lol. thanks for the nytimes link.
@Tori the Wizard of Oz references are cool.
i was picking up a bottle of wine at my local store, Trader Joe’s if you know. i’m not a wine guy really, so i asked for some help. the girl they send recommended the one that “she got for a party Sunday”‘. oh yeah? of course, another of us. i warned the people that i’m watching it with tonite that there may be a tear or two tonite. i’m not a weeper, but there are some things that can move me strongly. there are some pieces of music, some movies, books. i watched ‘Pilot’ pts 1 and 2 then ‘Exodus’ 1 and 2 this week. they were so young! i guess we were too. and i’d forgotten all about the raft being that early in the series. so many images and feelings to save.
we’ll all be together at least one more time. see YAE tomorrow.

  7. ShannyMac3T0 says:

@ (my new fb buddy) carol from boston: I feel your pain, that is exactly how viewing goes in my house until I freak out and scare the entire room a la the smoke monster! My husband still says “that show sucks, how long can people be stuck on an island” I just smile and say “oh boy, how are we still married after 15 years”?? ahahha!!

I plan to clear the house tonight about 8:50 eastern time. So if anyone in Southern New Jersey starts hearing clicks, metal rubbing noises, etc… no worries it’s just Shanny Mac pulling a smokey…

  8. Mattfromnd says:

I’ll have to hunt around and see if I can find it again, but I read an article the other day that said darlton plans to address some of the unanswered questions and dropped plot lines in the season 6 DVD set.

I don’t know exactly what that will be. Could just be them talking and answering things. Or it could be something like the “missing pieces” thing they did a couple seasons back.

It’s too bad more couldn’t be answered within the show, but it’s nice to know they are going to try to get us some additional info after.

Man it’s so close now. Unfortuntaly I will have to wait until later to watch, because I’ll be gone when it starts.

  9. Michael says:

I’ve said it before and One more time.

These producers will either be hailed as geniuses later on today for finally tying together all the mysteries and loose plot points that have developed over the past 6 years, or they’ll have to admit that they have been full of shit the entire time by going with the “It’s really more about characters than mysteries” defense when they fail to answer dozens of important questions.

No one expects the show to be the answering of a laundry list of questions, but to avoid stuff like the numbers, what smokey really is, how Jacob/the island can make a gun in michaels hands thousands of mile away misfire, why pregnant women die, etc
would piss off tons of people and make them lose trust forever.

I’ve got my fingers crossed for Genius. *****PLEASE*******

  10. Nadia says:

Ok here is why I think Jack has the wound on his neck….sorry if it’s repeated. During lax there was a scene where Jack hands locke his card if he wants surgery. That scene looked like michalangelos the creation of Adam when I saw a still of it in a review. The creation of Adam painting has two characters Adam and god. Adam is Locke and Jack is god. Adam is the rise of Adam and god isfall of man. God gives life to Adam. Jack gives life to Locke. John might walk and can do things. The business card is the reminder that god is the giver of life. Some have said the background in the painting where god is is the shape of a brain. Also god is surrounded where as Adam is alone.
Maybe Locke gets upset at Jack and cuts him in the neck to seperate brain and spine? Or symbolize it somehow? I don’t know but it looked strange how that image exchange looked like the painting.

  11. Nadia says:

Oh and Jack fixed bens spine right?

  12. Carol from Boston says:

@Jared Klein – I somehow missed your clip that you posted above. I just watched it. If YAE haven’t checked it out yet you really should. You wrote a beautiful song and the film editing is excellent. Wonderful job!! I am very impressed with you and all the talented people on this board.

Check out Jared’s video everyone, he’s got a lot of talent!! I love the lyrics. They are very powerful. Wow!

  13. Carol from Boston says:

This is from Jared’s original post

    “Hey Guys,
just wanted to share a song I wrote with you all
It is titled: Redemption, and is totally inspired by L O S T.
See if you can pick up the less obvious L O S T references.”

  14. steve says:

For those of you who Tweet, try to summarize LOST in 140 characters or less. Hashtag is #Lost140.

It’s not easy. Some of the tweets are pretty funny. Haven’t seen any spoilers.

  15. ShannyMac3T0 says:

k, so it’s 3:23 eastern time and I am getting itchy… so far I am almost 100% series finale spoiler free! I hope I can hold out!!

  16. HeyKir in NYC says:

    Hey all!
LOVED watching the pilot ep last night! My brother turned to me and said when it was over, “I’d watch that show!” lol I loved that watching it made me feel like I did when I first watched it…sooo excited and sorta scared and was DYING to know all the secrets. I love that the show has kept that feeling going all these years later…what amazing storytellers!
I remember my Mom telling me about how great the ending of the Mary Tyler Moore show was to her and how happy she was to experience a connection to a cultural phenom with the rest of the country. Now, even though she’s been gone for years, I am connecting with her in a way I never thought I would. 🙂
    How lucky are we!?

  17. LReene says:

@HeyKir in NYC – I too was very moved by re-watching the Pilot episode last night, even though I have watched it probably 4-5 times from DVD.

I told my wife as it was finishing, with a Pilot like that, it is no wonder that the show took off and became a number 1 hit over night. The whole 2 hours kept a person glued to their TV, even though they knew what was going to happen next. Awesome…… Just AWESOME!!

  18. I’m spoiler free, too!

  19. Angel says:

I don’t know if this is going to make any sense…What if the FSW universe is the repaired reality and what is happening on the island isn’t supposed to be happening. Does that make sense? I mean, we’ve assumed all along that everything from the crash of 815 onward is the main universe. What if that was never true? . Of course this would mean all the flashbacks and flashforwards from previous seasons were also attached to the alternate reality. Probably pitchfolks and torches outside of the producers’ homes.

But, there is some type of precedent for this. In the 1970s, Marvel Comics had a storyline in which Spider-Man was cloned by a Professor Warren. At the end of the arc, the clone was dead/disappeared. Fast-forward to the mid 90s, the clone returns and it’s revealed that he was the real Peter Parker/Spider-Man all along. Fans lost their minds and Marvel had to backpedal out of that storyline.

  21. Angel says:

Also, maybe when Jacob said “They’re coming” with his dying breath, he meant the FSW gang to help the island gang. MIB did seem scared by the prospect.

  22. Embie says:

@ Carol from Boston – my husband keeps asking if I am saved yet. He thinks it’s hilarious that I am so involved in the show, and thinks nothing of talking to me about something unrelated while I’m watching it. Fortunately my son is older and he just stands there and shakes his head, as if he’s seen it all before.

@ Angel – I remember too that MIB looked scared to hear that “they’re coming” and maybe you’re right that it’s the FSW crew.

  23. Embie says:

@ Carol – I didn’t mean my son is older than my husband, just older than your kids. Good luck with that!

  24. mle in Colorado says:

When my 13 year old found out there were spoilers out there…I had to threaten him to within an inch of his life not to even read them -even with a promise he wouldn’t say anything. You know how that is…when someone knows something and they can’t hide it. We have oscar parties every year and I have to turn my phone off because east coast family cannot keep their mouths shut. 🙂

I am kinda bummed we are not having a watch party…but at the same time…I like that I can watch uninterrupted. After season 2 we had a party as I was trying to drum up support for the show and we had a drink called a “purple Hurley” and one called a “dead libby” it was fun.

  25. Angel says:

@ Embie – If this is the case, when will they arrive? After the Island Gang is dead? Was it them accidentally shooting at themselves on the outrigger?

  26. k+e in Boston says:

    Dear Jen and Ryan,

The most important thing to say is: Thank You.

Lost is Special — very special. A years-long strange trip; a once in a lifetime, never to be repeated trip. A trip that had to be shared.

Thank you for sharing this special journey with us. Hawaii is a dream fantasy; whenever we think of Hawaii, we will think of you.

    Love,
    k+e in Boston

  27. Doug says:

    Ok gnight guys,

I’m off to bed now ready for an early call and the end of lost here in the uk.

Good luck to us all 😉

  28. LReene says:

@Angel – “shooting at themselves on the outrigger”. Now wouldn’t THAT be a hoot and a half that no one would suspect!

@Angel – I could sure see what you are saying happening. I’ve thought for a while now that the FSW losties are going to be returning to the island to make things right.

Whatever happens, I’m sure Darlton has something in store for us tonight. Just a few hours to go.

  29. Carol from Boston says:

@Embie- my husband offered to take my kids to a movie but they would be getting home at 9:30 so how is that helping? In the middle of the episode I’d have to stop and help get them all set for school tomorrow. He keeps getting mixed up thinking it starts at 7:00. I completely understand about your husband, why do you think mine is banished from the family room tonight? haha.

@Angel – you are hurting my head, lol! Tonight we’ll know but interesting theory.

Still spoiler free (except Jorge on Fallon), staying away from twitter and other sites. I am too nervous to even go on E or Ew.com.

  30. Carol from Boston says:

@Embie – just read your comment re: son and husband. Don’t worry I wasn’t even considering that, lol. Do we have a Lost Cougar on this board?

  31. Rich in Cleveland says:

    And here we go.

I’m so fanatic about being free from interruption tonight that I cancelled all phone service. (Ok, maybe it was due to other circumstances, but it’s definitely an added bonus.) My wife and I have a shared reverence for Lost so I won’t have to deal with the distraction of people who just don’t get it, aka red shirts.

I definitely want to thank R & J, Darlton, & YAE for all the joy, illumination, and communion of this experience. It was especially great hearing all the voices from every part of the globe. I miss some of the people who have been squeezed out by the innundation of all the new (and equally great) posters flooding in at the end. I’m looking at you, Eva from Estonia. Anyway, I’m not sure I would have made it through my darkest year without this one truly beautiful thing in my life.

    Namaste.

  32. Annietoo says:

I am so excited, and yet so sad. Six years of fun and cliff-hangers. Never experienced that before. So now I’m looking forward to the last slice of pie….but I’m missing it already. Count me in if this forum starts a rewatch!

  33. MLE in Colorado says:

@Rich- I hope you saw that I put you on my LOST Dream team…I am glad to see your post- before The End…

I remember watching this show in season one and trying to get co-workers hooked- so after every show I would come in and tell them just enough to get them to watch…and the Polar Bear and the guy in the wheelchair who could walk were what captured them…those two LOST buddies have since moved away…I wish they were around tomorrow to talk about the show…but I know YAE will be here!

When does it start on the East Coast? Soon? Just trying to figure out when I should stop checking this board….

  34. MLE in Colorado says:

So what are YAEs favorite cliffhangers?

I think mine was probably “What? you are REALLY not going to show us what is in the HATCH????”

I also liked all the guess as to who Jeremy Bentham was…

  35. cat says:

All, this blog has been great and I think all of you who through the years have shared your thoughts and ideas. A great forum.

Did you watch the pilot last night? Who knew the bamboo forest was so important. I missed that one completely!!! LOL.

See you on the other side!

  36. MLE in Colorado says:

Cat- the first minute was cut off from my dvr- was that when they said something about the bamboo forest? what did they say? I know that is where Jack wakes up.

  37. steve says:

@mle – It said the bamboo forest was near the center of the island where the light to protect was located, pretty much verbatim what Jacob said in the most recent episode.

You can watch it on Hulu:

    http://www.hulu.com/watch/151534/lost-pilot—enhanced?c=Drama#s-p1-sr-i2

  38. ShannyMac3T0 says:

Ahhhhhh!! 15 minutes until the pre-show for us East Coasters!!! I am freaking out! Loved sharing this with you all, read the bleep out of this blog and probably would have had gotten a lot more work done both at home and in work if it were not here but I would have never got the full Lost experience without “you all everybody”

Logging off… to get LOST one last time!

  39. cat says:

@MLE – they said the bamboo forrest was very important – that you couldn’t always see it and that the center of the island was through the bamboo and over the ridge – that was the general gist…..

  40. LReene says:

Logging off here too! Heading into the living room to watch the “pre-show”, then the finale.

See you all in another life brutha!!

  41. SM says:

I didn’t discover this blog until a few years ago. I have really enjoyed reading everyone’s thoughts/reactions/theories over the years. YAE have made me watch this show more closely, picking up on things I may not have noticed before.
I am going to miss this show so much, I don’t want it to end…I am in mourning :*(

  42. Tawl says:

    Help for Lost withdrawal…

My best suggestions.. find and watch:

1 Day Break – 12 TV episodes on Hulu.com (it’s a Groundhog Day with a dramatic and creative twist)

    2. The Thirteenth Floor (1988 movie)

    3. Dark City (1998 movie)

  43. Drdoug says:

The wait is over. LOST will live on forever. Plan on naming my next dog after someone/thing in the show. Will be a reminder for the next 15 years or so.

  44. aaron r says:

interesting that love became such an apparently important theme towards the end, as there’s sure a lot of it here. time to leave for the pre-party party, and i don’t want to go! can’t wait, but heavy-hearted.

    we’ll talk tomorrow, right?

  45. Boomer from Massapequa says:

Shout out to Alyssa for p-town gotta love lost DESMOND IS THE MAN!!!!!!!!

  46. Carol from Boston says:

Okay, almost time for the finale and I just got poked in the eye with a branch. My eye isn’t scratched but it hurts a bit. Talk about bad luck. Weird how it was my eye since this show focuses on eyes so much.

Enjoy the show everyone, my computer is going off, I won’t answer the phone and my kids are on notice to be upstairs by 8:50.

Have fun. See you all tomorrow.

  47. SM says:

One last thing…if the producers knew how they were going to end the show from the beginning…how come there are alternate endings being shown on Jimmy Kimmel?? Just sayin’…

  48. Rich in Cleveland says:

Thanks MLE! I rewatched LAX last night. Dogen uses an hour glass to gauge how long to hold Sayid under that looks just like the one from your favorite source. I also noticed Doc Arzt holding a compendium of venomous insects as he talks to Hurley. It’s amazing that you can keep seeing new depth with each viewing.

  49. Loren says:

This show has been fun because it made us think. It made us ask questions and really use our brains to try to find the answers. And we turned to each other to talk about the show, which sparked so many non show related conversations. I’m sure I’ll think of a lot of questions over the next several days, but for now, I’m just thankful for the journey we’ve taken together.

  50. Imelda says:

I loved the ending but hated the religious references. Also, couldn’t they have gotten better angel statues? They were so tacky.
That said, I thought the sideways world was either a place where all souls live, living and dead OR a fantasy of Jack’s as he lay dying. He was the only one who added something truly significant to the other world: his son.
Also his father did say to him, ‘you created this’. Could be the church get together or it could be the whole world.
And the light coming thru the door…was that the light from the island?
A lot of mystery, which seems to be a good thing.
