Donald Clark: Making a Living in Crafts

Friday, September 29. The Hawai’i Craftsmen Annual Juried Exhibition is known as the premier showcase for fine crafts from across the state. The deadline for entries begins Sunday on Kaua’i, as juror Donald Clark makes his way across the Island chain, judging works and offering lectures on his specialty, the business end of art. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa reports. | Artists are invited to submit works for the Hawai’i Craftsmen 39th Annual Statewide Juried Exhibition, on view October 14-29 at the Linekona Art Center, Honolulu. Beginning Sunday, Donald Clark will jury submissions and offer workshops on “Making a Living in Crafts” on four Islands, adding a slide lecture on fine crafts, at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Monday, October 9th. Seeing Red at the Pegge Hopper Gallery

Thursday, September 28. Public posters were at one time a dominant means of communication. They were tools for conveying information, then advertising, and beginning in World War I, propaganda. “Seeing Red,” an exhibit now at the Pegge Hopper Gallery in Honolulu, shows the impact they continue to possess. The Future of Music

Composer, futurist, and head of UH Maui’s Music Department, Dr. Robert Wehrman, hosts a weekly exploration of “new music” on HPR entitled “Mirror of the New.” This Sunday in a special afternoon lecture, he will examine the past and offer predictions about music’s brave new future. Discover Recycling Fair 2006

Tuesday, September 19. Last year more than forty five hundred people revved up for recycling at Honolulu’s Discover Recycling Fair, discovering easy ways to convert their ‘opala, or refuse, into new uses, including fundraising. O’ahu schools have already made over a million dollars through recycling bins on their campuses. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa checks O’ahu’s progress, with the 2006 Recycling Fair this weekend. Runs 3:42.

 

The 3rd Annual Cinema Italiano in Hawai`i

The Friends of Italy Society of Hawai`i, the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco and the Honolulu Academy of Arts are presenting a feast of contemporary Italian film September 26th through October first. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa offers these flavors of home from two lively members of the large Italian ex-patriot community in Honolulu. | The Honolulu Academy of Arts Doris Duke Theatre hosts the 3rd Annural Cinema Italiano in Hawaii, September 26th through October first. Michael Rooks Curates Westermann Show at TCM

Friday, September 15. H.C. Westermann is a distinctly American artist of the latter 20th century. Principled, independent, a master craftsman, he operated under the mainstream radar, but continues to influence artists today. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa spoke with Michael Rooks who curated a first-ever show of Westermann’s early paintings and objects for the Contemporary Museum. Runs 3:32.

 

Army Community Theatre Presents Sweeney Todd

Thursday, September 14. “Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street” scooped every major Tony award in 1979, the year it opened on Broadway. Stephen Sondheim wrote both the lyrics and score, and some consider it the greatest work in his stellar career. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa offers this sampling from the Army Community Theater production. Girl Fest Hawaii

Friday, September 8. Girl Fest Hawai’i is a growing community project committed to preventing violence against women through education and art. State agencies along with businesses and organizations large and small are now jumping in to support the festival’s 10 days of comedy, art, spoken work, film, music and workshops that begin tonight. Electronic Media Artist Eddo Stern

The UH Manoa Art Department’s “Intersections” program is starting the Fall semester with a bang, hosting Eddo Stern, an artist who operates in a zone between fine art and computer gaming. Israeli by birth, Stern’s games involve complex role playing in real and simulated environments. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa has this report. Runs 3:41.

 

“First Battle” Premieres at Hawaii Theatre

A new documentary, “First Battle,” premieres tonight detailing a fascinating and little known aspect of Hawai’i’s history before and during World War II. “First Battle” proposes how a multi-ethnic group of community members softened the impact of the war and helped craft a transition from plantation society.
