Celebrating Filipino Immigration to Hawaii
Friday, April 28th, 2006Friday, April 28. Filipino and part-Filipino residents make up the fastest growing minority in Hawai’i, now nearly 23%of the population. The annual immigration rate from the Philippines at about 4 thousand. These people are a visible part of the local community — a former Governor, Miss America, judges, legislators, entertainers, business executives and many others. One hundred years ago, the first Filipino immigrants came to Hawai’i as plantation laborers, called “sakada”. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa spoke with one of them, 77 year old Angel Ramos. Runs 3:36.
