Mauna Kea - Part 3

Friday, January, 27. Runs: 6:00. This week, HPR’s Noe Tanigawa has examined the conflicted history of the astronomical observatories at the summit of Mauna Kea. Today, Ku, Clarence Ching, one of the plaintiffs appealing a permit for expanded development, offers a tour of the mountain. This installment begins with a resource planner who mediates cultural, environmental and development interests. Keola Beamer performs “The Beauty of Mauna Kea.”

 

Mauna Kea - Part 2

Thursday, January, 26. Runs: 5:29. Last month, the state auditor issued a new report on the university of Hawaii’s Mauna Kea science reserve with its institute for astronomy. The audit noted an improvement in management practices but concluded many lease obligations remain unmet and faulted the state for lack of oversight. Last year the Board of Land and Natural Resources gave the university a permit to build 6 more telescopes on Mauna Kea. Recently, HPR’s Noe Tanigawa spoke with Kealoha Pisciotta (pish-ohta), one of the plaintiffs appealing the land board’s decision.

 

Mauna Kea - Part 1

Wednesday, January, 25. Runs: 4:13. It has been snowing on Mauna Kea and yesterday, one to two inches of snow were melting fast under cold, clear conditions at the 13,800 foot summit. Mauna Kea is sacred to native hawaiians, home to rare flora and fauna, and host to world reknown astronomical facilities. The Best Film Education, Ever

Friday, January 20. Runs: 3:33. Dove. S.S. Simens’ “Two Day Film School” sounds too good to be true. It promises students will learn to create, shoot sell and fund a film in 16 hours. Showman of the Pacific: Tom Moffatt

Thursday, January 19. Runs: 4:05. As a disc jockey in between the 1950s and 1970s, Tom Moffat was at the forefront of Hawaii’s rock ‘n roll revolution. He has helped define the cultural scene for generations by bring world class performers to the Islands — from Rudolf Nureyev and Sinatra to the Rolling Stones — and later this spring, UB40. Moffatt’s new memoir is titled: “The Showman of the Pacific: 50 Years of Radio and Rock Stars.” On Friday, January 20 Moffatt will appear at Borders Maui, next Saturday, January 28 he will be at Borders Ward Center, and on Saturday, February 4 at Barnes and Noble Kahala. Celebrate Black History Month at the Theatre with TAG

Jan. 13. “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone” by Pulitzer prize winning playwright, August Wilson, refers to a blues ballad about a Tennessee governor’s brother who used false arrests to enslave black men. In the play remnants of slavery, spirituality, pragmatism and ambition color the lives of people passing through a Pittsburgh boardinghouse. The Actors’ Group (TAG) is putting on the play Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons through February 5. MP3 Audio The production is dedicated to August Wilson, who passed away last year. Make A Wish Foundation

Jan. 12. Children with life threatening diseases endure probes, procedures, disruptions to normal routine, separation from friends, and other life changes that impact the entire family. A visit to the Make a Wish Hawaii Foundation reveals attempts to conjure up some magic for families during difficult times. MP3 Audio The Eroica Trio, hailed internationally for its refinement and dynamism, performs a benefit concert for the Make a Wish Hawaii Foundation at the Maimya Theatre on Saturday, January, 14 at 8 pm. The Trio performs on Sunday at the Maui Arts and Culture Center, and then moves on to the Big Island.

Video Artist Bjorn Melhus

Jan. 10. Acclaimed German video artist Bjorn Melhus recently installed a new work at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. “Eastern Western Park” is an irreverent combination of American and Japanese imagery that opened in Kyoto last year. The exhibit runs through January 22 in the Luce Gallery at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Honoka’a People’s Theatre and a Night of Music

Jan. 5. The Honoka’a People’s Theatre ion the Big Island’s Hamakua Coast is a jewel near the end of the road. Its acoustics are fine enough that Hamakua Music Festival recordings have been featured more than a dozen times on National Public Radio’s Performance Today. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa visited the theatre recently as eight internationally renown musicians prepare for this Friday night’s performance. Tickets are available from music stores around Hawaii Island, and online at www.hamakuamusicfestival.com. Showtime is 7:30 pm. Proceeds will benefit the Hamakua Music Festival Scholarship Fund, and the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival’s summer music camp in Waimea.
