Author Terry Tempest Williams on Ethics and Politics of Place

Dec. 29. Award-winning author, Terry Tempest Williams has been hailed as one of America’s most influential writers on issues of health, politics and the environment. Her books and articles have appeared in the New York Times and The Nation. She speaks with HPR’s Noe Tanigawa about her commitment to the ethics and politics of Place. Terry Tempest Williams will speak at UH Manoa Orvis Auditorium on January 4 at 7 pm. Her presentation is sponsored by the Pacific Writers Connection and the Manoa Journal.

The First Vocal Recording of Natalie Ai Kamauu

December 22. Natalie Ai Kamauu is the daughter of two pillars in Hawaii’s hula community, Howard and Olana Ai. Their Halau Hula Olana, known for its keiki dancers, has received both international acclaim and awards at the Merrie Monarch Festival. Kamauu, herself, is a Miss Aloha Hula, the Merrie Monarch’s highest award for solo hula. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa offers this look at Kamauu’s first vocal recording called “E.”

Great Local Music in Waikiki

Dec. 16. Great Music and a sip of something spirited might be just the thing to sparkle up your holidays. HPR’s Noe Tanigawa ventured into Waikiki to scope out a venue that offers both. Bruce Hamada and Jim Howard perform at the Halekulani’s Lewers Lounge Tuesdays through Thursdays from 8:30 to midnight, and until 12:30 on Fridays. KIPO’s Don Gordon co-produced Hamada’s new CD, “Two for the Road.”
