Did anyone else think that this particular wording was weird or at least thought provoking?

I believe Miles will be responsible for Chang losing his arm. I don’t know how or why. Perhaps Miles opens up the cages and releases the polar bears and they attack Chang. Or, more likely, Chang loses his arm somehow related to getting baby Miles and his wife off the island. Either way, I think Miles will play a role in this a la Luke and Darth Vader.

Also, the building of the Swan Station in “Hoth” reminded me of the construction of the Death Star in “Empire.”

The Orchid was in construction/being dugged when Faraday met Chang. We have seen in last episode that the Orchid station has been nearly completed. So Faraday did some digging before going to the mainland.

The Arrow had been build to develop defensive strategies against the hostiles… maybe the plan has been to develop a station with a killing gas and wipe out the Island. But the quantities had to be uged so it took time, and the hostiles found it before and killed Dharma with it. And the location: again, who would want to live next to a killing gaz station???

If Pierre Chang is the leader of the D.I. maybe they don’t want to be too harsh toward his son.

I hear what you’re saying, but you’re completely wrong.

Yes, Kate messed up, but I thought it was completely plausible that she would react in this way. She had just lost a son that she raised for 3 years, so of course she identified with Roger and wanted to comfort him. Since she knew Ben was OK, she was trying to give him some piece of mind. I have absolutely no qualms with the writing here; the writers set this up beautifully in “Whatever Happened, Happened” and earlier episodes.

The purge is not going to happen before a very long time (Ben’s growth, the swan’s “button” to counter the “incident”…). Pierre Chang looks at his arm during the comiccon video probably knowing his going to loose it.
The important thing here is that Faraday laws are RIGHT for now, whatever happened happened. Pierre Chang and Dharma ARE going to die and everything that has happen until the return of the Oceanic 6 (because he met one telling them when they came back) can’t be changed.
But what Daniel will try is bring back the Dharma Initiative because they work is “valid”. And the only time that can come back is with the Ocean 6.
Why Daniel will he help the DI after working for Wildmore? Well… we don’t know Daniel’s agenda yet.
Ho. And the purge, Ben didn’t do it… Widmore did (he was the leader at the time) (just go to the Dead is dead and read my “what did Ben do”?)). Took him sometime to prepare and the help of Ben but I think the truce being broken and discovered during “the incident” will lead to that.

Theory – Faraday comes to the Island from Ann Harbor as a scientist. He is key to the incident and is probably 100% DI now (brainwash). Probably been sent from Ann Harbor on a mission to the Island. Possible…look at how comfortable James and Juliet are. Who’s to say Faraday doesn’t have time invested in the DI now.

A couple of things do not make sense in the time line though. The Swan, aka the hatch, has to be completely built in order for Chang to make the training videos for the stations, before the Purge happens. Ben is also grown when this happens, right? In the Chang CominCon video, you hear a baby crying, that cannot be Miles if the Purge is near. But how far away is the Purge from when we see Hurley and Miles with his Dad in the van?

Back to the Theory – Not sure how Faraday got to Ann Harbor in the first place, but I think he has interests of some sort that align with Dharma. We saw him just get off of the sub in the last episode. I think he’ll befriend Chang and tell him about the future. He must have some convincing evidence of the Purge for Pierre Chang to want to record himself.

Theory – As Ben has said, He didn’t cause the Purge, perhaps someone from the DI/Ann Harbor wanted it and made a deal with the Hostiles? After all, I do get the feeling from Radzinsky that some of the people will be killed after the stations are built. Perhaps the Purge is an abort mission from Ann Harbor.

And what about his timejump that Mrs Hawking was part of. She seemed a bit surprised when Desmond tried to deviate off course from the time she knows.

Hmmmm. So Desmond finds Faraday. Faraday tells Hawking about Desmond. Hawking moves in time to check out if this Desmond fellow is for real. And she catches him nearly altering time before she intervenes.

So how did she time travel? Faraday only knows how to do it mentally. I suppose she might look pretty much the same back then and could jump into her own body just as Desmond does.

Oy! My head hurts. But in a good way.

Either way, it’s really annoying. I figured that Jack would be trying to figure things out when they got back to the island yet he seems to be just fine with cleaning classrooms and shuffling around with that sedated look on his face.

I think you may be right on target there.

As for the theory about Miles getting too close to baby Miles and causing the incident, I can definitely see that being true. The way Chang says “incident” without going into detail might suggest that it is something personal to him. And also, the whole video with the bunnies had to be done for a reason so it would make sense that Chang would become obsessed with figuring out how to prevent this from happening.

Also, I think we’re going to find out next week that the Variable is Desmond. I think the Variable is going to be this season’s Constant and we will learn from Faraday why Desmond is special and how him and him alone can do these that alter the future.

Did anyone see what book Dr. Chang read to little Miles? It’s “Me and My Polar Bear.” Classic!

Also wondering if anyone remembers what the symbol looks like that branded Juliet an “other”. Does anyone have a screencap? Have we seen any one else with the same tatoo?

Plus, what about Penny and Desmond? Why is there such as long delay in their part of the story?

Finally, Miles seeing his dad reminded me of Field of Dreams, where Kevin Costner’s character gets to meet his “dead” dad.

It’s the only thing with any color that stands out during the scene.

Hmmm, unfortunate color choice, Juliet! I say her days are numbered.

One question for Ryan and Jen! What are you guys going to do during the hiatus? I know that I for one would love, love, love, love for you do do a rewatch for either season 1 or 3. Your season 2 shows were so great, and I’d love to get your thoughts on those seasons as well.

So I think if your on Jacob’s list your a good guy. Otherwise your a nuisance… killing you is the best way to deal with you. Ben was not a good leader according to “Friendly” Tom because he did order him not to kill the losties.

I like Hurley and Miles, they are funny and a joy to watch. But I have my problems with pacing and development of the overall story. This story did not have anything really to do with last week’s episode in terms of story flow. It kinda feels like every week we are watching a different, separate, story linked by trivial secondary stories. I mean consider that Ben, Locke, Jin, Sun, Sayid (and yes Rose and Bernard) do not appear in this episode at all. Jack is not the same one we know. It is impossible to keep up the flow of the story this way. These characters ARE the story and they are rarely together and now they are only seen every other episode or so.

Sure some questions were answered but this info was info that we more or less knew/guessed and at least for the moment seems to be peripheral to the main story.

About the third group, it made me thing about something that Ben has repeatedly said a few times in the past. He said that they are the good guys, does that mean that there are three groups? The losties, the others and the “bad” ones? I assume that he did not mean the Dharmites because he said that in present time i.e. after the purge. So is this a third as of yet unknown group of people related to the island? If so is it not a little late in the overall story arc to do so? hmmmm…..

What is up with Jack? He seems so resigned and passive. I understand staying cool and at a certain distance but he seems to be a totally different person and also insignificant, did I miss something?

Of course skipping next week will not help the story flow either…..

I still believe in Damon and Carlton so I am not giving up but some venting is good from time to time.

But also, we know the Lost writers like to play with words so maybe it’s “lies” as in to not tell the truth. Could it be everyone’s favorite liar Ben who “lies” in the shadow of the statue?

Hmm.

By the way: Go on “Dead is dead” commentaries, I want some opinions on my “Ben is a (over)protector of the Island” theory aka Ben Is Not Bad aka B.I.N.B.

So, those who knows what lies under the shadow of the statue… either are sons and daughters of Island inhabitants (but then how come could it be DI?), either they mean the fallen statue (and the temple lies beneth and we haven’t seen behind the wall but some dharma will eventelly), either (ok third either, who cares) they “know” past present future due to the Dharma Initiative and that’s why they are sure they are about to win…

I guess a HUGE point will be made about “past present future” in next episode The Variable (and I guess the Ocean 6 ARE the variable)

The DI has also been the main group pushing the “sides” argument. With the sonic fence and their logos everywhere, it is obvious that they like to draw lines between who’s with them and who’s not.

And think about it, the code question is “what lies in the shadow of the statue?” But in 2007 (the present), that statue has been reduced to a four-toed foot so the people who know that must have ties to a group that was on the Island decades ago, say in the 70s.

@Rich in Cleveland: I have to side with Michelle on this one. I think the writers are being smart to diminish his role because let’s face it, we all were getting sick of him. But now, the way he’s evolving and being less reactive, I think it’s setting us up for his ultimate return in the final season.

I still believe Jack = Jacob. And I think that opening image of the whole series will come to represent his eventual “awakening.”

In short, I’m happy to see Jack developing like this, and I hope we see a successful payoff for it.

So the last war is not Ben’s others against Widmore’s others… It will be the on going war of Dharma against Others. Science versus Faith.

I found the episode was just as funny the second time. I really enjoyed this episode. I also noted that for once Daniel was not wearing a tie!

I’m a long time listener, first time commenter. I’m a novelist and screenplay writer working on a storyline that includes a number of “anti-heroes.” In getting a better feel for such a character I looked for examples in film, TV, and literature and was surprised to find one “Ben Linius” from Lost listed as an example. Do you folks think Ben is an “anti-hero”? I know a lot depends on the definition, but none the less – what do you think?

In terms of the DI going back and forth using the sub, I believe the answer lies in the “Looking Glass” station. Remember, it sent a sonic ping that allowed the sub to travel. However, Ben ordered that those signals be blocked. Then, the FDW got turned. Who knows what result that had on the station. That could explain why Hawking had to use such extreme measures to relocate the island.

BTW – What’s wrong with Ewoks? I think they’re sweet .

It would make sense. Obviously Candle loves his wife and child, and would do anything to protect them.

Miles is the one who tells his father to abandon his wife and kid. Brutallity.

1. Rousseau says before they take Alex from her she sees a “pillar of black smoke” and “whispers”. Which we don’t see or is even implied in this episode. Also, why wouldn’t Rousseau tell Sayid back in season 2 that Ben took her baby all the way back then, instead she just calls him “one of them”.

- If I remember correctly she did not say this to Sayid when she had captured him. She told this story later when she had seen Aaron. Perhaps she was setting up a plan to take Aaron at the time she said this…using the black smoke and grabbing him like she did. However…I remember she actually caught Ben in her net trap and yet, even though she knew he was actually the one who took Alex, turned him over to 815ers but insisted that he would lie for a long time and he was one of “Them, The Others”. Don’t know why she wouldn’t torture Ben herself?

2. Also, the Widmore and Rousseau time lines are way off. So Rousseau landed on the island 16 years from 2004, which is 1988. She was 7 months pregnant at the time. and her child was taken shortly after Alex’s birth. So that places this event around 1989-1990. Widmore told Locke he’d been looking for the island for 20 years since his exile. That was roughly 2004-2005, which means he was exiled around 1985, which is roughly 3 year before Rousseau arrived on the island.

- I think Widmore says “Nearly 20 years”, but not sure. I also thought Locke was told this after he turned the wheel…and it was in 2007. ( The 06 had been back 3 years ). This 3 years minus a little less than 20…call it 19 1/2 make Alex an infant when he was expelled…although she is a child in the swing. However it may have been a little after Alex was abducted when she made the recording. I can’t remember if she said she made it before or after Alex was taken and her team died. She does not mention a baby in the recording and talks more like the team had just been wiped out.

3. Ben, when he stole Alex, would have probably been around 21-25 years old at the time, given he is assumed to have been 10-12 years old in 1977. Why the heck didn’t they just hire a 20 year old to play Ben? would it have been that costly?

I guess they had already bought that crazy rat’s nest to put on his head. Haha…

Good questions about the unanswered mysteries of travel to and from the island. I’ve always asked myself: why a sub? Why not just a boat or plane? What if only a sub can reach an unknown entry point, the inverse of the exit point found in Tunisia? Remember when Ethan said the voyage was “kind of intense.” Doesn’t that sound like Ben & Locke’s experience in Tunisia? In this way, the island could continuosly drift in space/time, yet you would always be able to reach it through the other end of the worm hole.

I was able to locate the connection between Widmore industries and the Hanso foundation from earlier ARG’s. Rebecca in Copenhagen asked who was writing the checks for the DI–Widmore. In addition, we have the historical ties of Widmore to Ms. Hawking as well as off-island ties through Brother Campbell and the monastery that supplied Widmore with his high end wine. And where do we find Ms. Hawking but in a DI station? I was fully prepared to say that this new force, the DI itself, served Widmore except that this idea seemed to be contradicted by Bram’s group setting itself up in opposition to Naomi’s expedition. There can be no doubt though that Hawking, whoever she’s aligned with, provided the critical intel that allowed the statue worshippers to join the plane to Shambala. @ Bomir: I think they needed to do more than just hit the window, I think they needed to bring the island something it really wanted in order to get there.

Defend the island.

Chapter 125 is probably the best-known segment of the Book of the Dead. It deals with the dead soul’s judgment by Osiris and his 42 judge deities.
The deceased soul must recite the “declaration of innocence” which is addressed to Osiris and consists of the denial of a series of wrong-doings in order to assure Osiris that he has lived a decent life. ( Remind anyone of Ecko? Ben? )

1.) Now we know that both Miles and Charlotte lived on the island while children. Who else can be added on this list? Daniel?

2) Mile’s bedridden mother appeared to have cancer and using chemo (loss of hair). Could this be related to “jughead” buried on the island and some how she was exposed to the radiation? Is the “incident” related to any of this?

Personally, though I liked the episode, it wasn’t my favorite. It looks better to me after reading all these posts. Thanks R&J and everyone who posts here for enhancing my LOST experience.

Lets reflect on the third party abducting Miles in 2004 and plotting with guns on the Hydra island in 2007
Eloise has left the Island and it appears not at the same time as Charles (circa 1992-93)
Before the purge, was Richard the only Hostile/other able to leave the Island?
So best guess is Ellie left on the sub too after the purge.
Widmore knows where Ellie lives in LA. How would he know she left the Island? Because she left before he did?
Does he know about the Lamppost and the windows for going back to the Island? If he did, I guess he would have tried to use it
Ellie took over the LampPost from the DI (remember she is an Other)

When Bram is contacting Miles, it is shortly before he joins the freighter crew (2004)
Now 3 years later, Bram and Ilana are on A316. It has to be based on the Ellie’s knowledge from the LampPost
Why did the Bram/Ilana wait till 2007 to use this A316 window ? There had to be other windows of oportunity during these 3 years

If they were DI, they would have known all the time about the LampPost and that it was operated by someone who was not one of them (DI)
It seems unlikely that Eloise would help out the O6 going back and at the same time partner with the Bram/Ilana group to take the A316. Seems we have conflicting agendas here…

You are so right! Another weird thing about that scene, when he goes up to the dead kid’s room, he passes pictures hanging on the wall by the stairs. When Miles comes down the pictures have changed slightly. Just like the picture of Penny and Desmond had changed slightly. I’m thinking now it was more than a continuity error. (Or like when Charlie said he couldn’t swim, but later he could.) It as if time is being changed, but only slightly. Maybe someone messed with time in way that Miles lost some of his ability to talk to the dead.

Thank you Hurley for coming through again and being a person. The only other character that I have yet to figure on that level is Sawyer. To have that many references at the ready for instant nicknaming means that he has to have a head full of pop culture junk to match any geek out there. could be what makes him a great liar too.

I think the 3rd faction definitely has to be the new Dharma Initiative. Why else would they have show the video at comic con? why else would they have spend tons of money on this new DI campaign last year. It certainly isn’t for nothing. Remember season 4? they showed the Orchid station video? we didn’t see anything related to that until the very last episode of season 4!

So, my guess is that Bram and Ilise are with the new DI, quite possibly working with Hawking and Faraday. This is probably the case also because Hawking wasn’t directly working with Ben, since Ben said he needed Locke to give him the information on where to find Hawking prior to killing him; we would have to assume that Hawking was doing her own thing prior to Ben meeting her.

I was also very pleased with how the Chang/Miles daddy reveal was handled. Unlike last week’s ep, where I thought we were shown scenes just for the sake of seeing them (i.e., Ben stealing Alex,) I appreciated the fact that Miles suprised us by coming right out and telling Hurley that Chang was his dad, then at an appropriate point let us know how he learned of this. The semi-thud moment just before the commercial break paid off for me a lot better than a telegraphed flashback scene.

Did many of you cacth the fact when Jack was in the class cleaning up that the chalk board had some information regarding Egypt.

It seems that there was a class talking about Egyptian time frame (Old, Early, Middle, Late). In addition, I could make out some symbols.

I tried to slow down the view of it but I could only see a few words. Again, Egyptian history playing a clue.

It was not until someone called my attention to it this season that I bacame aware of the apparent importance the way dead bodies are handled. We saw Miles detailed to transport the dental tragedy to his Daddy, indeed taken into the ‘circle of trust’ and yanked out of the security station, stat. Daddy immediately ‘disposed’ the body, then explained “what body?”.

We also got a hint that Miles cannot tune in dead that are cremated (with ashes spread). He explained ‘that creates a problem’ (before asking for more money, which is kind of a knee-jerk behavior for Miles, no?)

So, ‘Dead is Dead’??? Not when you can still communicate with them! Miles can, under the right conditions. And Hurley can, hey, he thinks Miles is jealous cause Hurley’s power is better than Mile’s. (LOL) We were given a big hint about Miles importance, an importance that seemed very vague last season, leaving us wondering why he was part of the freighter contingent. And our ‘New Group of The Statue Shadow’ even wants to waylay his joining the freighter? Hanso is his Daddy as well?? Miles just moved up, way up, in the order of Lost characters, maybe all the way to ‘A’. Teamed with Hurley–three cheers!

Death and the dead. Already a major Island theme, this is about to get a big new twist, and possibly be central to our major thesis.

“But if you come with us, all thos things you spent your life trying to find out, you’ll know. You’ll know who you are Miles, why you have a gift and most of all you’ll know about your father.”

Like the fact that Hurley can talk to dead people, and the fact that Miles’ ability to talk to dead people seems to make him the key to Naomi’s mission, and the fact that we have seen several dead people on the island walking around…

doesn’t this make us wonder who ELSE is dead? Or even if they ALL died on the original plane crash, and somehow the Oceanic Six were all brought back to life on the island, but their leaving into the real world caused a major problem, b/c dead people aren’t allowed to rejoin society, so they all had to come back, and since there’s something different with Sun (maybe she never died), she didn’t go back in time and just went with the plane normally, like Ben and a dead Locke.

Kate botched it, but Roger is paranoid, if my son were kidnapped and someone were trying to comfort me I don’t know if I’d automatically assume she was involved. Maybe Roger knows a bit more about YB’s relationship with the Others than we suspect.

I loved seeing the numbers come back. Even from the beginning of the show, when young Miles is outside room #4 and finds the dead man inside.

As a proud Michigan grad, I also love all the references to my alma mater and have to cheer every time someone says “Ann Arbor.”

I thought the Miles and Hurley scenes were fantastic! I love this show!!

Can’t remember an episode quite like this one. Loved it. Especially all the VW bus dialog and Miles’ face when Chang announced his favorite music was COUNTRY.

Jack and Sawyer are headed for serious friction. Sawyer referring to Jack as “doc” is not endearing as it’s meant to be insulting. Go Sawyer.

Very cool seeing the Swan and Orchid hatches in construction.

“Ewoks suck, dude”. Maybe Hurley can write Return of the Jedi, as well, and leave Ewoks out of the screenplay. Hey Hurley, while you’re at it, convince George Lucas that Jar Jar Binks is a bad move.

After reading about the Comicon video featuring him- a past Chang reaching out to the future and saying he knows about the purge- I think that this is going to end up having some continuity. Daniel is back and I think he’s going to have something to do with telling past Dharma about the future- it definitely sounds like his voice also in the Comicon video. After last night I am also convinced that Bram and Ilana are new DI. It is about time. Ever since we saw that food drop way back when, you had to know someone, somewhere, was out there…

Mike : I don’t have a problem with the compass bearing. Maybe that’s always worked until Ben moved the FDW and messed everything up?

When Miles read Felix, I took it to be a simple confirmation that Widmore staged the plane crash. Now I’m not so sure. Interesting.

Is the third faction the DI or Hawking’s people? Couldn’t it be both? We’ve last seen her in a DI station in LA. If the DI is still around, there’s no way they’d tolerate that… unless she’s with them. And we’ve seen Bram try to get Miles to come over to his side and fail. Wouldn’t Bram have likely tried the same thing with others? Did someone agree to join? Faraday seems like a very likely candidate since his “mom” would have to be involved with them as well.

The only thing that could justify the timeline is if Widmore somehow got to the donkey wheel and got off the island that way and went back in time by mistake. Widmore did know where the donkey wheel “drop off” was in the outside world, he had a camera there. How did he know unless he had used it before? If Widmore turned the wheel and got off at a previous time, it would explain the 20 year difference and his sudden wealth. It would be pretty easy to get rich when you know what stock to buy.

re:Dharma – is there a Dharma Costco out there or something? It must be a huge organization if they have their own generic brand! Ha! Have you ever seen a real label besides the candy bars? Why the need to have everything be Dharma labeled?

Did anyone else think that there appeared to be a structure that would have been the size of what it took to surround jughead in the swan site? Cement bottom. I think this could strengthen the argument for those of us who think jughead is in the base of the swan.

Overall, I think this was a fun episode but not a great one. Darleton gave us a lot of answers to small things, most of which we had figured out awhile ago while leaving more significant answers for another day. I feel that this is true of most of season 5, lots of little answers that we have been clamoring for are being delivered, lots of fun dialog, fast moving scripts but in the end, I think it will be the finale that defines it all.

I’m no longer sure that Widmore planted the plane on the bottom of the Sundra Trench. It seems more like he was trying to collect evidence that someone else did it. If he did it why would he need photos of the empty graves? I also recall that Tom showed Michael photos of the same thing trying to convince him that Widmore did it. In other words, we still have no idea.

Secondly. Do you remember when Desmond arrived on the island and was dragged into Swan station by Kelvin? Kelvin asked him “What did one snowman say to the other snowman?” Kelvin was Dharma. Ilana and Bram are asking people “What stands in the shadow of the statue?” I think that may be evidence that Dharma still exists. After all, as late as 2004 they were still making food drops for the people that were in the Swan station, i.e. Kelvin (who was actually dead by then.)

Perhaps the future war that Widmore was referring to was a war between the Others and the “new” Dharma folks. First of course, we have to resolve the power struggle among the Others between Ben, Widmore and Locke for leadership.

I know the timeline issue is tripping a lot of people up. But I just want to remind everyone that on-island time and off-island time cant quite work together. When Daniel tests the payload after arriving on the Island, there is a clear difference between when it should have arrived and when it does. When the Island moves at the end of Season 4, Daniel and his fellow zodiac-floaters are “within its radius”, he says…meaning there is a definite line surrounding the Island where its timing and movements begin to affect people. I know this is sort of a cheap green light for the writers to explain away any inconsistancy by saying that the Island is just on a different schedule, but…I think it is

Also…This episode reminded me of Desmonds line that everytime he walked past the concrete wall covering the huge electromagnetic force, “his fillings hurt”….And I thought to myself, “He better be grateful he couldnt get any closer!”

Final thought: In the Orchid video, Dr. Chang/Candle/Wickman freaks out when the second bunny appears and then demands they be separated. I am wondering if the upcoming incident has to do with grown-up Miles being too close to baby Miles?

I really enjoyed this episode. I will agree that there was definitely a heavy dose of audience-pandering, but there was so much smile about and plenty of interesting reveals to discuss, so I am a happy nerd.

I will say that I liked the official introduction of Bram, who I recognized from the first season of “Dexter”. The whole van abudction was an interesting way to go…I am sure we will come to discover that some of the masked accomplices have also arrived on the Island via Ajira 316. I like the theory that they are a nex-gen Dharma group that is coming to take back the Island from the Others…I sort of get the feeling that they are a very underground operation, almost like freedom fighters or revolutionaries. Its a cool twist. While I was a bit irritated with new characters this close to the ending of the show, I dont mind seeing how this arc plays out.

Also — Naomi and her team arrive on the Island in Season 4 with a mission from Widmore to capture Ben so that Widmore could return. I had always sort of viewed the battle for control of the Island as a sandbox struggle between Ben and Widmore, but until now I think Ive been overlooking the third element in the mix – the Dharma loyalists who feel the turf belongs to them. Could these be children of DIers who were shipped off-island to escape the Purge and are returning to take back whats theirs? Would that explain why they know about Miles, who might have a similar story? Its just that now we are seeing a new tactical group arriving on the Island with their codes and their big steel boxes, very similarly to how Naomi and company did before when they were sent by Widmore. I was watching this episode wondering who was behind the Bram and Ilana alliance…because I want to know how is signing those checks. Could this be who put the fake 815 on the bottom of the ocean?

I am also wondering if you guys think this DI revolution thing relates at all to the Lost Experience with Rachel Burke and her desire to go around and expose the Hanso foundation? I know she uncovered some dark facts about the Valenzetti Equation, like you can see on the Sri Lanka video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-eHEYswgK8)…as in, trying to alter the equation by using humans as control subjects in medical testing. Maybe Bram and Ilana are part of a DI group that has found a way to alter the equation and therefore feels they are on “the side that wins”, and they want to return to the Island to continue their work? I dont know…all the running around in black, tossing people into vans…it just felt very Lost Experiencey – thought there might be a connection.

PS – I also agree with Glenn that whatever lies in the shadow of the Statue probably has to do with the Orchid. But my question is what kind of shadow are they talking about? Because if we look at anything from like…Raiders of the Lost Ark to the Mayans, we can find examples of shadows being cast to reveal locations or information, but only on certain days or at certain times, and only when viewed from certain spots. So Im wondering if the shadow is going to lead us to something new? Perhaps another underwater station? Because we remember that the four-toed statue was right on the coast when Jin, Sun and Sayid found it in Season 2. Just a thought!

One other continuity issue i had with this episode was this:

So Ms. Hawking said there are specific windows to the island that pop up on a regimented interval every so often and is the how the O6′ers get back to the island. Plus they must re-create (as closely as possible) the manner in which they got to the island or else unexpected things may happen (which we learn is the time jump for some).

But…you see the DI people coming and going as they pleased in seasons 3 & 4 and even in this season with Widmore. Before episode “316″ we thought that it was as simple as a compass bearing that got you to the island. We learned from Hawking that this is not the case, but it was proven the case in previous seasons, so what’s the deal with that? it doesn’t add up.

1. Rousseau says before they take Alex from her she sees a “pillar of black smoke” and “whispers”. Which we don’t see or is even implied in this episode. Also, why wouldn’t Rousseau tell Sayid back in season 2 that Ben took her baby all the way back then, instead she just calls him “one of them”.

2. Also, the Widmore and Rousseau time lines are way off. So Rousseau landed on the island 16 years from 2004, which is 1988. She was 7 months pregnant at the time. and her child was taken shortly after Alex’s birth. So that places this event around 1989-1990. Widmore told Locke he’d been looking for the island for 20 years since his exile. That was roughly 2004-2005, which means he was exiled around 1985, which is roughly 3 year before Rousseau arrived on the island.

3. Ben, when he stole Alex, would have probably been around 21-25 years old at the time, given he is assumed to have been 10-12 years old in 1977. Why the heck didn’t they just hire a 20 year old to play Ben? would it have been that costly?

I could go on but this is stuff about last week’s episode and i’ve already vented on the previous blog post. anyway I really liked this episode, classic Lost is back this week. Can’t wait for the next one!

I have a quick question; back in season 4 Hurley and Sawyer were playing a game of Risk, in that scene Hurley says “Australia is the key to the whole game.” Do you guys think there was any real meaning in that line? Australia has not been mentioned or really included in the story at all lately.

- It’s still not clear that Widmore ordered the plane crash faked. What Miles said was that the dead Felix was going to give Widmore various pictures and documents. He didn’t say anything about whether Widmore or Ben committed the act. He could have been bringing evidence against Ben to Widmore; after all, why would Widmore want pictures of the graves and evidence of the plane purchase if he had ordered it done himself? Or, it could have been that Felix was taking the documents to Widmore in order to blackmail him. Basically, while the evidence seems to point to Widmore, we haven’t actually got any new information.

- We know Daniel was captured along with Sawyer et al. and saw young Charlotte in the DI camp. So he must have headed back to the mainland at some point (via submarine, I assume), either in the employ of the DI, or simply as a civilian, who then somehow gets a job with them in the interim. Sawyer convinced Horace to let the group stay around for a while before being deported, which might have given Daniel time to convince the DI of his value as a researcher, so I favor the view that they offered him a job, along with the rest, and he went back to Ann Arbor to work from the main office, so to speak.

- @mike: I am also worried about continuity in this season. The writers seem to be struggling to keep things consistent across the greater storyline. I’m not saying they’ve gone too far; this is still the best TV show ever, etc. etc. But especially when one starts thinking about the timeline, one sees weaknesses that have yet to be patched up. Much has already been made about things like Widmore’s age, his seemingly infinite wealth, and the date of his exile from the Island. I am more concerned with the frequent foreshadowing of the still-unspecified Incident and the more familiar Purge. Those dates have been set (supposedly) in the mid to late ’80s; at present, there is no way the Losties can have anything to do with them without another time jump. But I feel something in the air…maybe it’s just the humidity. Or maybe the writers are teetering on the edge of a major timeline faux pas. Hopefully we’ll know more before end of season.

I also think that Brent, Ilanna and Co. are not working for Ben. I’m thinking that some faction of the original DI from the mainland wants to get back at Ben for murdering the island DI.

I had an “uh, oh” moment when Miles was walking towards his parents’ house. I thought, “no, you’re not supposed to see yourself in the past”. His emotional reaction was brilliant, though. I think he’s going to experience some new inner peace.

Geeked on LOST!

I am leaning towards Bram and Ilana being part of a third faction that we have not seen yet. Maybe the hostiles/others are not the Island’s original inhabitants. Maybe the hostiles/others took over the Island a long time ago and Bram and Ilana have come back to take back what is theirs.

Anyways, loved the episode and love the podcast.

I was just about to say the exact same thing about last week’s episode, but didn’t find the time to get on here to do so. Thanks for putting the question up there anyways.

If I remember correctly, the punchline to the snowman joke is “Do you smell carrots?” and the question was meant to be to identify Mr.Friendly’s replacement to the hatch. However this time we’re given a riddle that not even Ben showing a sign that he knows the answer to it.

Miles will interact with baby Miles. This will be the Incident. The interaction will create a “feedback loop” in time as Miles will be crossing his own timeline. It will have at least 1 of 2 possible effects, perhaps both.

(1) The island’s timeline will contract in response, bringing the past forward and the “future”, or our present, back. Thus all our Losties will be reunited, at least for a while. Then, when the compensating measures of the Swan hatch, or perhaps some other stop-gap measure, goes into effect time will right itself and our Losties will be pulled apart, some being pulled into the island’s past, others to the present or maybe even the future (how cool would that be?!).

(2) This one is, I think, more likely and was foreshadowed in this episode. Baby Miles, due to the interaction with his own future self, gains an awareness of other people’s timelines. This manifests itself as an apparent ability to listen to dead people, but really he’s just aware of their past. I think both his parents know full well this is what happened and why.

I just hope older Miles survives the interaction. I have a funny feeling that he won’t.

Super episode — Hurley was hilarious and hopeful — loved that he wanted to help prevent global warming thirty years earlier

As someone who also has “daddy issues” I appreciated Miles’ line to the father about letting his child know he loved him when he had the chance

I am of the school that contends that each detail is deliberate and invested with some meaning. Yes, it is both amusing and utterly conceivable to imagine Hurley’s character deciding to write the sequel to Star Wars. But what is the subtext to this comic relief, especially in light of the abduction scene with Bram? THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. I have no idea who these latest others are, but I felt a palpable fear for our treasured island from this unknown force that never claimed to serve the island, only to be the “winning” side. Now we have some indication of what Miles meant in S4 when he warned Sayid about random –transmissions– from the sat phone. “It can hurt. It can hurt a lot.”

I personally love that Hurley still holds out hope for change. He urges Miles to change his relationship with his father and to try and prevent the fate of the DI. Hurley even wants to prevent the flaws of the Star Wars trilogy. Ewoks. Enough said.

Has anyone else thought that Pierre Chang is to the DI what Richard Alpert is to the others? He’s mysterious and aloof and seems to know a lot more about what’s really going on, but he’s not the one at the center of the decision-making process. The consigliari.

My wife points out that fillings are not, under normal circumstances, susceptible to magnetic attraction. While matter and even light have an electromagnetic component, the real world effects of magnetism are usually limited to iron and a few other metals not found in fillings. Maybe it’s the other non-metallic minerals that have been mined on the island since Magnus Hanso or maybe someone has a better explanation.

The Egyptian material on the chalkboard specifically related to language and the progression of hieroglyphics through the various periods of Egyptian history, ultimately concluding in a phonetic alphabet. I did detect some hints at the god “Thoth” which I researched a bit on Wiki in preparation. The “tripling” listed on the board seems to correlate to the title “great, great, great” or trimesgistus linked to this god. And Thoth was the god of language itself and served as the voice of the will of Ra.

Daniel is definitely stuck in 1977, he made the jump with them, but that being said, he also knows how to travel in time with his machine, so what is to stop him from making the time machine again in 1977. Daniel may be the one who really developed the time traveling bunny theory in the Orchid.

Mike, I agree with you, this felt like a first season episode complete with a flashback. To be honest, I feel that all the time travel caused the viewers to concentrate too much about the rules of time rather than the plotlines themselves.

and why is Kate such a nimwit? It frankly didn’t fit that she would go up to him and talk about something like that- something that big. Poor writing- they should have had it play out differently.

Loved the ep, it’s one of the nice changes of pace Lost can achieve in what some would call ‘filler’ episodes, but this one had lots of little nuggets in it. I wasn’t expecting to see Faraday but am glad the ‘he’s not with us’ line previously really meant he just wasn’t with them in Dharmaville anymore. And now he’s back, yay. But is he wearing a tie under that jumpsuit? Important questions!!

And yes, the Star Wars references really rocked, showed that Hurley has been thinking a lot about time travel and how to use it best

Miles playing the straight man to Hurley is comedy genius. I love these writers and actors.

Poor Kate messed things up again. Juliet and her “I just got back and he’s gone” acting was impressive. As was her ability to turn it off immediately after Ben’s Dad left the room.

So worried about what is to come. But having Daniel return somehow makes it all feel like it’s going to be ok. Sure, it’s not, but still.

First of all, it was awesome seeing Felix getting knocked out by Sawyer…I agree, this should have happened long before this episode.

Who was the guy that was killed and how does his death relate to the overall storyline? Anybody? He apparently was one of the black overall wearing crew. Or was he?

As for the people who picked up Miles, since we know that they, and apparently, Ilana are not working for Whitmore. Who are they looking for? Could they be a reorganized DI that is out for revenge? Could these people be working for Daniel?

Speaking of Daniel, how is he connected to the University of Michigan crew?

How long can Sawyer and Juliet really keep and tied up Felix in their house?

You know a great episode of Lost when it leaves you asking for more.

I think he was in the initial episode when Sawyer and Juliette killed the hostiles and I remember Daniel saying something like “there’s Charlotte,” when she was a little girl.

Even after all the Hurley banter, asking Miles’ Dad about his wife and son while the “real” or “another” Miles is sitting right next to him….nothing beat the Ewok slam!!!

If I ever get a chance to sit down and watch the original trilogy with Jorge Garcia, my dreams will be fulfilled!

The only other thing I got out of the episode was that the apartment complex that Miles went to live at with his Mom looked exactly like apartment complex that Ralph Maccio went to in Karate Kid. The pool, the doors where Mr. Myagi lived!! It had it all!

Faraday is back! So he snuck off the island and then came back as a scientist? Hmmm…

So… the third faction. Brand was the guy in the truck who spoke to Miles. And now he’s on the beach with Ilana on a mission. Very cool. I’m still not digging the secret password business, but hopefully that’ll make more sense in time. Are these the Dharma people trying to make a return? Maybe. My wife’s thinking that the third faction might be Elloise Hawking. That makes some sense. She was another important person who left the island although we don’t really know why she’d want to go back. She has an edge that she knows about the time travel business and Ben and Widmore don’t seem to know as much. She also knows about Desmond. Is this how he’ll get back to the island? What if she needs Desmond for her bizarre purposes? Faraday knows about him too and he knows about his “mom”. Could he have sent Desmond to her NOT to tell his mom anything but so she would now know where Desmond is? She’d already made arrangements to get her people on the Ajira plane. So what if she wants Desmond on the plane too? She wouldn’t want him seen. She might have had to take him by force. And his unique time travel nature might cause a problem if he was subjected to the same time displacement as the Oceanic 6 when they returned. So he’s packed safely inside that big crate. Wouldn’t that make for a great end of episode shocker? The crate is opened to reveal Desmond inside?

Also note the Easter Egg in the classroom, where they are learning about Egyptians. Damon and Carlton also made a reference to the Egyptians in their video podcast before the season started, they said the island was old and the heiroglpyics pointed to it being around during Egyptian times. I definitely think Egypt is the key here.

I can’t believe we have to wait two weeks for a new episode!

Was I the only one who was expecting to see the DeGroot’s come out of the sub?

It’s now apparent that, despite fan speculation, Charlotte’s body did not disappear during the last flash to 1977 because she already existed there as a young girl. With Miles seeing his baby self, the writers have now blatantly told us what they hinted at when Locke traveled back during the FDW skipping to see the light in the sky from the night he was banging on the hatch – two different ‘versions’ of the same person can exist in the same time-space. The question, of course, remains: what happens if we don’t heed Pierre Chang’s video blooper warning and the different versions interact or touch?

I’m going to reiterate my speculation from a few weeks back that I think a lot of the mysteries of the island will be explained in a Season 6 Richard Alpert flashback episode. It’s coming – the writers have so much to explain about RA and seeing the island through his eyes would be an ‘insider’s view’ to its history.

”You’re just jealous, ‘cuz my power’s better than your’s.”

Hurly had the too best lines in the show.

I loved it when Sawyer knocked Phil out, he needed that about two episodes ago.

The more I read it and explore it, the more sense it makes. If you carefully read the Rules sections in each Level for the game (especially the ones for Level Five and the “Time Out” info), you will come to the conclusion that Level Five is about to be completed: all the Losties in Dharmaville will get to work together for the greater good, all characters are being reset to their original roles, and most importantly, we have heard plenty of references to the “two days” that have passed since the Oceanic Six returned to the island (The two days that were missing for the completion of Level five).
I know what I just said will sound confusing to many of you, but again, if you visit that site and explore it in detail, it will make sense.

This is my favourite B characters story of this season, and from past seasons. I didn’t really care about, Juliet, Sawyer, Jack and Kate in this episode really. Hugo, Peirre, and Miles had a much intriguing story.

All in all. I didn’t think this was a weak episode. It asked as many questions as it answered. And we finally got to see some much deserved Miles backstory which was really fullfilling!

I would say it was better than The Little Price, Whatever Happened, Namaste, and The Lie.

But thats just me!

We learned a lot. The main thing we learned is that Iliana and Brant are not working for Widmore. It seems we may be seeing the members of the reconstituted Dharma Initiative ready to take revenge on the Others.

It was really neat to see the beginnings of the Orchid and especially the Swan stations. Clearly weird things happen at the Swan, as evidenced by the poor guy whose metal filling flew out of his tooth and killed him. I have to believe that this has something to do with Jughead being buried at the location of the Swan.

We now add another character who has major Daddy Issues – i.e. Miles. You have to wonder why his mother and he left the island when he was a child.

We also know why this episode was called “Some Like It Hoth.” Another great kudo by the Lost writers to Star Wars. How funny would it be if Hurley did write the sequel to Star Wars: A New Hope?

It looks like Sawyer and his friends will have some “Splaining to do” now that he and Kate have been caught on video. How long can they hide that other security guy who they tied up?

So, Daniel has been off in Ann Arbor with the Dharma scientists. How did they know he was a scientist? I don’t even remember how he was introduced to the Dharma folks back in 1974. Did we ever see him in the 1974 Dharma camp?

I was pleased to see that Jack had some semblance of reasonability in this episode. He calmly handled his limited role.

I guess we now know why Miles wanted Ben to pay him 3.2 million dollars. He wanted to match the money that Ben’s enemies were willing to pay him. Kinda neat that Widmore offered 1.6 million which ties into the numbers.

We also now know that Widmore definitely planted the fake plane and bodies in the Sundra Trench as Miles told us when he spoke to the body in the restaurant.

So, what may have seemed like a pretty innocent episode had so much information.

Liked it…a lot!

Two weeks to wait now….noooooooooooooooo!

1.) FINALLY someone in this show addressed the problem of communication between people. Hurley became my hero tonight when he brought up the fact that many problems can be avoided if people just talked to each other. I know this has been discussed earlier on the show as being true for previous seasons and I think it continues to be a main theme of the show.

2.) The bit with Miles’ abduction raises so many questions about whose battle this is and how many sides there are. Were these Ben’s people or is there another “team”? If they were Ben’s men, you’d think that they would have had the money to buy off Miles.

5.) Jen, you were probably feeling like the universe was coming back into order-another stupid Kate blunder!

4.) Ken Leung did a great job. Never thought that we’d see him this emotional. He really pulled it off.

5.) I was sooo relieved when I found out that the “reveal” of Pierre as Miles’ father was not going to be the “thud” moment at the end. I was going to kill the writers if that was the case. But, true to Lost’s amazingness, I was not disappointed.

6.) Now we know where the 3.2 million comes from!

I’m fairly sure this entire episode was solely for the purpose of pleasing us hardcore fans to bits, and it most definitely worked! Hurley/Miles is the best team-up on the show since Charlie/Hurley. The two characters are so awesome together!

Seeing an emotional side to Miles was good, the second to last scene even moreso, but the last scene was incredible. Daniel’s first appearance since LaFleur is something I’ve been waiting for for a while, and it paid off!

Then, of course, there’s Star Wars. If Hurley’s book wasn’t enough, his analogies at the end? Amazing.

I wouldn’t call this the best of the season (LaFleur gets that honour), but I’ll safely say I’m putting it just on top of Dead is Dead and Jughead on my list.

Looking forward to the next episode, unfortunately a week off, but I’m sure it’ll be paid off in a Daniel-centric episode.

I have mixed feelings about this episode.
Another male character with daddy issues; so what?
But the fact that the lies about young Ben’s disappereance are falling apart seems to be the road for a great season finale. I think that is the road we are headed for: our Losties will be forced to escape Dharmaville. Or the background on the “incident” Marvin Candle has mentioned in the Dharma Initiative Orientation videos from previous seasons could be the scenario for the season finale. Either way, exciting things to come. But the episode did feel like filling, not much substance.
And the ending: did we know that Dan Faraday was not on the island? then, why did he return enlisted as a new Dharma scientist?

Hurley has a great idea…Lucas will be looking for a sequel – brilliant!!!

Miles and Hurley sure do have a nice back and forth chemistry on screen.

Hurley to Miles…”You’re just jealous, ‘cuz my power’s better than your’s.”

I love this show.

As a Star Wars afficianado, of course, I hope it’s referencing the 1977 premiere. But since it seems to be Miles-centric, I’m thinking it’s not.

I don’t even care if they actually tie it into the episode, I just love the reference to my fav of the Star Wars movies, Empire Strikes Back!
