Live Together, Die Alone

What a ride. We loved it. Some big answers, some new possibilities, and some major branches of the sprawling conspiracy tree mercifully pruned. Two hours that didn’t feel like two hours, and such delicious connections and brilliant moments that we’re a bit speechless. “I think we’re going to have to watch that again.” For now, I think we’re going to be limited to random notes and notions.

  • Desmond crashed the plane. Not a huge surprise, as it was probably the most plausible explanation, but I think it was handled perfectly. On the other hand, it’s now clear the crash was an accident. So, were our survivors on the plane by design? Are all these people on this island for a reason, or not? As far as grand theories go, this knocks a few big ones out of the running.
  • The last scene of this last episode, just like the first scene of this season’s opener, changes everything. (Imagine if we’d seen a glimpse of Desmond in the hatch at the end of Season One.) For the first time, we see the “outside world.” It’s still there. And people are looking for this island. What this means for Season Three boggles the mind.
  • Not sure what to make of the Others. They’re not cave people, but they don’t seem particularly intense, either. (”Where’s your beard?”) Either way, it’s good to see Henry again, and that he’s clearly going to be a bit part of the next chapter. Is he “Him”? Jury’s still out. Jen picks up a very strong Kaiser Soze vibe.
  • Zeke’s real name is Tom. That’s, what, five Toms in “LOST” now?
  • And Desmond’s full name is Desmond David Hume. Hume being another philosopher, who just happened to have been fond of the works of John Locke.
  • The button was real, the hatch was important, but both seem to have both come and gone this season. If the electromagnetic properties were what kept the island off the grid, though, and if the “fail safe” blew it all to smithereens, is the island visible again? And will weird things stop happening? I doubt it.
  • How else can you hide an island? Move it. I’ve liked this theory from the beginning, as it also explains the polar bear and drug plane. Penny Widmore seems to have known enough that the island is concealed by magnetism… but Henry’s instructions to Michael and the call from the monitoring station convinces me more than ever that there’s another reason the island is so hard to find.
  • Kelvin was Inman. A nice touch. But if the crash was indeed an accident, the continued emphasis on these pre-crash connections are problematic. A little hint here and there was great. Now they’re beating us over the head with them.
  • Speaking of which… Libby! Now really, can her meeting Desmond in a coffee shop really be a coincidence? “I just happen to have this boat I don’t need…” Either way, it was good to see her again, and it was a surprisingly strong scene.
  • The giant foot was especially unexpected. Colossus of Rhodes? But four toes. Animal? Cartoon character? It doesn’t look like this island will run out of stories any time soon.
  • So where does “LOST” leave us? Locke and Eko missing in action, Charile inexplicably unconcerned (but back in with Claire). Michael and Walt heading off to parts unknown. Jack, Kate and Sawyer in custody of the Others (or “the hostiles,” which is a new term for them), and Hurley’s in for a long walk. Will Sayid, Jin and Sun save the day?
  • Speaking of Sun, I loved seeing her joining the “merry band of adventurers,” rather than once again left behind to play in her garden or fret on the beach. Jen liked the morning sickness scene.
  • Jen also loved the discovery of the pile of canisters and notebooks. Positively eerie. My favorite scene has to be the reunion of Locke and Desmond. “Box man.” The hatch going kablooey was pretty awesome, too.
  • How about that Hurley bird? Seems like they’re just having fun with us, rather than dropping a big clue. The “snow globe” reference also falls into that category. Tommy Westphall, anyone?
  • Henry says, “We’re the good guys.” Coupled with his now disproven assertion to Locke that the button does nothing, our heads are swimming with what he might know or not know.
  • The shippers must be all a titter. Charlie and Claire, Sawyer’s short chat with Kate about nets, Jack’s valiant attempt to rescue Kate… But, what about “the look” Jack and Kate gave each other before they got sacks on their head. I thought I saw Kate give a deliberate blink signal to Jack, maybe a Plan B. Jen was most reminded of the “carbon freezing” scene in The Empire Strikes Back. Aww.
  • So the “girl in the picture” was Penny. Jen notes that rules out Penny as the would-be adoptive mother of Claire’s baby. A pity, I kind of liked that theory.
  • One thing I don’t get (besides the oblivious Charlie thing). If the Others were after Jack, Kate, and Sawyer, why not nab them when they surrounded them in the forest? They even had Locke to play the “go back and tell them to buzz off” role. And again, why them? At least now we know Hurley wasn’t in the “real” set.
  • “Mmm,” Jen said. “Desmond sure cleans up nice.”
  • Another book: Charles Dickens’ “Our Mutual Friend.” Summer reading! (I’m really trying to resist picking up “Bad Twin.”)
  • Locations: I think the prison Desmond walked out of was Oahu Correctional Center in town. The Pala Ferry pier looked like a combination of ‘Apua Fishpond at Kualoa (where Jin met his dad in an earlier episode) and a seaplane pier off Lagoon Drive near the airport. And the coffee shop was Honolulu Café downtown. That arctic monitoring station could have been anywhere.

Has anyone heard anything about JJ Abrams putting clues about Lost into Mission Impossible 3? I saw it the other night and I caught a mention of a Dr. Wickman. Did anyone else catch anything?

  2. tinac Says:

Ethan Hunt used the alias “Kelvin.” Also, the final credits listed The Hanso Foundation.

  3. sodadood Says:

Here in Canada, we were able to watch the 2 hour finale at 6-8pm EST. So if you don’t want to be spoiled, read no further.

OK, so I have to say that this episode of Lost was SO much better than I would have hoped for. Henry Gale - the ‘real’ leader of the Others; Michael and Walt re-united and released… did anyone else picture their boat exploding at the end as they sailed away? And FINALLY all the background information about Desmond, and a definitive connection to Whidmore Industries.

I was screaming at the television when we learned that the button does indeed “do something” and that it was actually the Pearl Station that was the real joke. Desmond crashed the Oceanic flight was just outstanding.

So we’re left wondering: is Desmond alive or dead? Did Mr. Eko survive? And the Island IS located somewhere as the very end indicated.

Anyone have any theories for next season? Will we get more background information on any of the Others? I’m assuming there will somehow be MUCH more info coming about Desmond’s girlfriend’s involvement with the Island. I don’t know about you, but September won’t come fast enough for me.

  4. Bryan Says:

Really not necessary to come in and post before everyone else has seen it. Yeah we know, you see it in Canada before us. Stop bragging.

  5. sodadood Says:

Um, I wasn’t bragging… I said that just in case you didn’t want to read spoilers. It airs at all sorts of different times around the world. And why would you come in here just BEFORE the episode airs in your time zone anyway?

  6. Ryan Says:

Hey, I’d brag too! Some of us are spoiler whores. Thanks, Sodadood, for some of the tidbits. (Just this afternoon I browsed through Insiderscoop’s spoiler pieces at the ABC forum.) I can’t believe I have to wait another five hours!

  7. Jen Says:

    Sodadood,

Thank you, thank you. Come in and brag whenever you’d like.

    I can’t wait.

  9. WillF Says:

Oh, and if you are looking for a job like I am: http://hansocareers.com/

  10. Bryan Says:

What the heck did I just watch?
More questions than answers for sure

  11. LockeItUp Says:

Desmond’s girlfriend’s dad(Mr. Widmore) arranged for Desmond to make it to the hatch so that he would forever be out of the life of his daughter. She has been spending her unlimited money and resources to hunt for him, knowing that he would someday cause the electromagnetic pulse. Not-Henry Gale as the real Other leader…perfect.

  12. debbie Says:

When Michael asked Henry”who are you guys, henry says” we are the good guys”…I think he believes that so there is much more than meets the eye. remember we still have sayid to save the day.

  13. myfoodishere Says:

this one left me hanging. i have a number of questions
-what is the deal with the giant foot that sayid saw on the boat with jin and sun?
-why did charlie act as if nothing happened? he just went back to camp and did his thing with clare. no worries about eko and locke.
-was that really sayid’s smoke signal? it seemed alot like the pillar of smoke from previous episodes.
-the un-henry gale? friend or foe? his line “we’re the good guys” threw me off a bit.
-if the “others” know how to find help and get rescued…why dont they?
i have more questions, but i wont bore you. it was a great episode but alot of things seemed rushed. the whole boat thing with libby was quite akward

  14. meg Says:

can’t believe what i just saw. who’s dead/alive? where’s sayib and the sailboat? did this latest incident bring down another plane? and if the plane’s crashing was random, then why were we treated to 2 years of character cross-paths.

  15. jim Says:

Wow. Huzzah. All hail. This was the real deal.
    But let’s inventory:
Is Locke dead? Is Eko dead? Is Desmond dead? How did Charlie manage to get back to camp with just some scratches and a bad earache? Have Michael and Walt been set up? What awaits our other pals when the burlap sacks come off? Where have Sayid-JIn-Sun been since the system failure? How did Desmond’s girlfriend know to look for electromagnetic anomalies?
I’m sure you all will have a hundred more similar questions. But here’s something to speculate about: if “Henry Gale” is Him, what was he doing wandering around the jungle alone when he got caught in Rousseau’s net trap? Doesn’t make sense. Maybe there is still yet another “Him”.
A great episode, with some unforgettable imagery. The pile of notebooks piled up by the phony pneumatic tube was just surreal. Etcetera, etcetera. We’ll be talking about this stuff all summer! So let’s begin.

  16. WillF Says:

I don’t think that the compass bearing Henry Gale gave to Michael is going to work in getting him rescued now that the electromagnetic “incident” has flipped out the island. Also, interesting that Sayid’s captor in Iraq was Desmond’s roomy.

  17. Dave Says:

Wow. FANTASTIC finale in my opinion.

I guess I was on the money about the Pearl being ‘the experiment’:

(Then again, a stopped clock is right twice a day.)

I love that it answered so many questions (Desmond crashing the plane is BRILLIANT) and yet left so much unanswered.

Sodadood — definitely wondering whether Michael and Walt on the boat is a trap. I too expected bad things to happen. I guess we’ll have to wait to find out. Interestingly (in my opinion), if the electromagnetic field is destroyed, the compass on the ferry should work and Michael and Walt should indeed be able to leave. I wonder if the Others are aware of this.

I too am wondering what will come of Eko and Locke… hopefully still alive as they’re great characters.

    Other thoughts I had –
    * I wonder if Libby was a part of Dharma? She got Desmond (indirectly) to the island.
    * Also wondering if Kelvin was a plant by Dharma (I could have sworn there were multiple men in yellow suits at the beginning) on the island. The day he “lured” Desmond out — Kelvin knew a little too much to not be in on it — was the day of Oceanic 815, which he indirectly got Sayid onto. Maybe there was a plan to bring down that flight, but it seems fairly clear that it’s not purgatory.
    * Are the Others part of Dharma, or other former subjects who have been enlightened? I have a hunch it’s the latter.
    * Is Penny Widmore looking for Desmond and that’s why she got the call? Or is she working for dad’s company and happens to be the person they notify if all heck breaks loose? I can’t imagine that Penny would be able — despite all her money and resources — to figure out that an electromagnetic disturbance halfway around the world would be attirbutable to Desmond (!) if nobody else has been able to locate the other Losties.
    * Any connection between the ice scene at the end and the polar bear?
    * Why send Hurley back to the camp? Just to scare people? Or maybe the Others ARE running the experiments…

As a last thought, Sawyer’s line about the parrot crapping gold was GREAT.

I can’t wait till next fall.

  18. NemesisVex Says:

So for the scenes in the snow, did they Lost crew shoot on Mauna Kea? Or was that CGI?

  19. Dave Says:

Locke It Up — I just don’t buy that Penny Widmore would somehow know that her father would somehow sabotage Desmond’s (Libby’s?) boat from the race around the world, get him to the island, train him for THREE YEARS to think the EMP was so critical, somehow hire people to search for this (again for THREE YEARS), MISS the first time the system failed and the EMP went off, and somehow find this one. It just seems like too much of a stretch. I think she works for daddy’s company and is the point person. Oh, the dramatic irony. But I suppose we’ll learn next fall.

Will F — I was under the impression that turning the key turned off the electromagnetic generator. That was what Kelvin implied (when drunk). So the compasses might in fact work since there’s no abnormal magentism on the island any more. This is why I wonder if the Others actually are part of Dharma or just subjects who learned a bit too much and got fed up but now can’t figure out how to get the eff off the island. :)

  20. Troy Says:

What about the look between Jack and Kate? Was that a ‘hey, you’re the best. i hope we live so we can make out’ look or a ‘hey, now we do the plan we talked about earlier off-camera’ look? It really seemed like they had something going on there, more than the love triangle thing. And what, turning the key disperses all that energy and turns the sky violet? Weird.

  21. Arad Says:

How did Desmond’s girlfriend know to look for electromagnetic anomalies?

This has me wondering too. Perhaps she’s in on Dharma.

So, if last season’s cliffhanger was the hatch, and this season we have learned that it was in fact real, what are we in store for next season? The focus for next season leans towards discovering who the others are, but are there other possibilities? Will we still be kept in the dark?

    Any thoughts?

  22. Cady Says:

Did anyone notice what the computer screen said at the end of the episode? All I caught was “Electromagnetic (something something).” Maybe it’s not significant, but it’s bugging me not to know.

  23. Emily and Amy Says:

Among other more serious questions (and we, too, had many of those listed above)…….where does Desmond get the *mountains* of alcohol he consumed both on the boat and as he arrived back on the island?

  24. im tired of being lost Says:

why can’t we solve some answers here,,,where is the black monster thing?
what do the others know,do.or are they lost too?
the show is really running for the money is it not????
    yyyyeeesss money ..commercials…hello!!!,,
is anyone getting tied of being lost?
lost, lost, lost…….im going to get lost see ya!!!!

  25. Justin Says:

Cady, i think that it said, “magnetic anomaly detected”. I also think that Hurley is too angry at what he discovered about Michael to keep his mouth shut when he goes back to camp. Also, I think that Sayid was close enough to see what happened. What incentive does Hurley have to lie to his friends? Especially when un-Henry says they are taking the others home? WTF?

  26. solomonb Says:

It was a fantastic episode, but I felt it was predictable. Mainly because I read the call sheet. They promised that the season finale would shock. How is the fact that Penny Widmore is searching for Desmond shocking? I’m sorry. I just don’t get it.

  27. sodadood Says:

Emily & Amy - regarding your question about all the alcohol - I noticed at least a couple of times that Desmond was gulping down bottles of booze with the Dharma logo on the side… so no doubt there must be a stash of those around somewhere easily accessible - either that or he stashed some before his departure where only he’d know where to find them.

Something else about the episode seemed off: Libby giving Desmond the boat out of the blue… and if she ended up in the same mental institute as Hurley, how’d she end up there? Even if she was working for Dharma in some capacity, for her to be killed by Michael wouldn’t make much sense. Plus, if she WAS working for Dharma, wouldn’t she have disappeared into the “Others” camp when she arrived on the island?

I gotta say… this season finale has got me more hooked on the show than ever. And I’m ok with not knowing everything at the moment (like where Rousseau is at during all of this, the black monster, how Kelvin could fix a boat when he couldn’t fix the rip in his bio-hazzard suit, etc.)

  28. Adam from Grapevine Says:

I guess the filmed some scenes with Walt a LONG time ago, meaning they had this planned out for a while. It was pretty obvious that some of the shots had a Walt stand-in though. I’m guessing we won’t be seeing Michael for a while… but hey… isn’t this the first episode where we’ve seen what has been going on in the outside world?

Must say this is the best season finale so far. Alias was a bit of a let down, 24 was great, but Lost tops them all!

  29. MB Says:

If Sayid doesn’t save the day, there is always Rousseau’s daughter, Alex. She helped Claire & talked with Michael when the Others captured them. I feel like Alex is waiting for just the right moment before she goes against the people who brought her up. What was up with the bird swooping down? And, If Desmond’s key turned off the electromagnetic source, does this mean that the people who were healed when they got to the island (Locke, Rose, Jin) will go back to the way they were pre-crash?

  30. JediJeff Says:

Stop! I can’t take anymore. Tremendous! Absolutely the best finale I’ve ever seen! So different from any other episode!

    THINGS I LOVED:
Eko and Locke battling with their sticks like a couple of Jedi
Jack nearly getting postal on Michael
Eko locked out of the hatch and freaking out
    Hurley’s realizing Michael killed Libby
Fake Henry Gale asserting his authority
The electromagnetic field crushing everything around it
    The blinding light thing
    Charlie’s deafening experience
    Desmond regaining his hope
The true love of Penny Whidmore still willing to look for Desmond
Charlie getting a hot kiss from Claire

  31. Superdave, NM Says:

Hey guys did none of u catch the the mysterious quote??- first when Locke 1st saw desmond on the beach drunk, he told desmond “was does one snowman say to the other?”, desomond says “I smell carrots” or something like that.. well in the flash back 4 desmond, the first thing Kelvin tells desmond as he brings desmond into the hatch is”what does one snowman say to the other” and desmond says “what” (cuz he didnt know) and Kelvin says “your not the one”. hmmm very interesting like some type of password to pass on to the next guy, maybie he knew locke was supposed to be the one and how do they(kelvin & locke -who dont know eachother) both know the same saying,, thats to be seen next yr I can’t friggin wait, great finale by far..

  32. Rollo Says:

Super Dave The reason locke knows that question is becuase desmond asked him the question in the first or second episode this season. locke did’nt give desmond the answer, and now after being reunited locke asked him the question , “so, what does one snowman say to the other”

  33. HeyBrah Says:

Not as many answers as we were led to believe … I thought that detailed explanations were going to be given to each and every Lostie as to why they were selected for being brought to the island. At the risk of minimizing the answers, all we were given was that a mistake made by Desmond (by entering the numbers late) caused the Oceanic flight to crash.

  34. JimboFromMontaukAFS Says:

    Hail Atlantis across the Ocean”"

  35. Lost in the North West Says:

Wow… A lot of build up and only more questions. I expected some cliffhangers but I hoped for more answers. I agree with comments posted previously that Charlie acting oblivious after the EMP explosion (?) was a little wack. Traditionally EMP is thought to affect electrical circuits (like a neutron bomb); however, it should have had some affect on the human body as well. I am sure some one in this group knows more than and I (please explain). If it had truly affected the electrical circuits the boats motor should have fried though (one would think).

I do not get the whole science tent in the North/South Pole and the waiting game for the “anomaly.” Definitely seemed far-fetched. I do not think Libby was apart of the Dharma Initiative, more “magical/mysterious” connections than methodical intentions (IMHO). I am still pissed at Michael. I do not really see any redemption value in him coming back to save the day. He is a murderer and I hope the boat blows up, sinks, etc. If anything maybe Hurley will drop a few pounds getting lost on the way back to, camp and show up mid-season next year a new man. Claire will dump Charlie (can we say relapse :-)) and Hurley will finally get the girl.

I just hope they do not start having guest appearances by “stars” or I may just have to jump ship. If Tom Cruise shows up on the Island… Hey maybe this is some how connected to Scientology and all their brain washing mumbo jumbo.

Last but not least. What was up with Sayid finally getting in some prayers to Mecca (by the way how did he know what direction it was?)? I know, I know he is former Republican Guard, ya ya ya. If you ask me it was, just PC crap thrown in by the studio to further the apologetic attitude of Hollywood towards Islam. We never saw him pray before; it is a little late for “authenticity” if you ask me. Maybe ABC will gain some viewers on Al Jezeera…

  36. Arad Says:

Thinking over the episode, I found it enjoyable, but not the end-game finale Abrams warped it to be. I feel as though alot of questions are unanswered. I don’t mean big questions. I mean to say many small tidbits are still not tied at the end of this season.

Now perhaps this is a device to use later, bring up where Cindy/the kids are, explain more about the Others…have our war? But for the average viewer, I am not sure how this will all tie in.

I like this show alot, and I’ve kept my faith, but I must say it is currently in a stall. I’m nervous, and anxious about next season’s success and satisfaction.

  37. papplehead Says:

WOW, by far the best episode of lost
I completely called that desmond brouhgt the plane down, but that was just because i read the call sheet. lol. Big question here, how did pen know to look for electromagnetic forces. She said before that she had enough money to find anyone, but did she know that he was on the island? I guess it’s just something to look forward to next season. i sense a big confrontation with sayid and “Henry” next season and what about the foot? Really wierd. Ryan and Jen, please keep some new topics during the off season so us losties can still post and discuss teh greates show on television. thanks

  38. chris Says:

Yes hello to all of you who watched the fantastic second last show of lost,
    it was all thumbs up!
I think i figured out what the mysterious power source is underneath the
hatch that was blow up at the end of the show… its a miniture unstable worm hole!
Yes thats right an interdimensional gate way to other places. Pushing that button kept it from collapsing in on itself; also how that is achived is anybody’s
guess especially with 1980 computers. Extremely high doses of electromagnetic radiation can cause people to see things that aren’t there.
So the EM. radiation came from the wormhole which caused people to halucinate. How’s that for an explanation?

  39. chris Says:

correction it was the last seasons finale

  40. Dave Says:

Superdave — I wonder about the quote as well. For a show on a tropical island there sure is a lot of snow (polar bears, references to snow globes and snow men, and then hte conclusion). The snowman line has home up several times now, and Desmond’s answer — which sounds like a bad joke — is probably not the “right” one. It may be a Dharma inside joke. I wonder if Walt, being a child, would have provided a similar answer instead of just going, “WHAT?,” and that’s why they want him.

Sodadood — regarding Libby, I wonder if she’s not a part of Dharma/Hanso/Widmore. Perhaps she was sent to the psych institution to do something to Lenny, who knew the numbers on the hatch (and for all we know was once “Lost” or in Dharma. Perhaps she was with the DeGroots (hence the background as a clinical psychologist). Maybe even — like Alex Rousseau — she was a sympathizer with the Losties or subversive to Dharma in some other way, and that’s how she wound up on the plane. I don’t know how to tie it all up.

And also — I think Kelvin *could* have fixed his suit. But why bother, since it’s unneeded? He drew attention to Desmond — SOMETHING about that day was out of the ordinary — and Desmond noticed the not-very-subtle rip. Maybe he wanted Desmond out of the hatch to the EMP would go off because he/Dharma/the Others/whoever were trying to get Oceanic 815 down. That would explain the interconnectedness of the passengers and Kelvin/Inman. Desmond may have inadvertently downed the place, but been set up to do so.

  41. Sally from Michigan Says:

    Hey!
Penny is the female counterpart to ruining this experiment. This is actually her island. Maybe her Dad gave it to her and he’s a “retired” leader. Since she is so “rich” she can find it anywhere. It used to be in the “snow belt” of the ocean, hence the Polar bear from season 1.
With the foreshadowing of snow fom the plane…it looks like it is well on its way back to the “snow belt”. The others have kept it in place for their experiment in and ideal location temperature wise. Everytime if they don’t reset the button it moves.
That is why he said “i’m pressing it to save the world”. The experiment is to save the world….The others are really good and Penny is BAD news trying to get in on the experiment. She is the Devil.

  42. Ira Says:

Did anyone else get a “Planets of the Apes” vibe from this episode? Desmond being dragged through the forest by a rope, Desmond chasing Kelvin across the rock formation, the giant broken statue on the beach? Several times during the show I kept thinking of that. And in Planet of the Apes the end game was that they were on Earth but at a different time than when they left it.

  43. Deborah from South Florida Says:

Please clue me in. Who was Inman? I must have missed that. Also, just a comment, I was really surprised that Charlie was so intent on saving his friend, Eko, and after he got away from the hatch and learned that Eko & Lock did not get out, he was so unconcerned. I found that difficult to buy. That was a “huh??!” moment for me.

  44. meg Says:

i can’t resolve the image of the foot statue on the beach. apart from historical references to hesperopithecus, fossilized man, chinese dragons, and bigfoot, why 4 toes? none of these were all man-i didn’t see ant fur carved into the rock. anyone have ideas of what the foot is from?

  45. pinkk Says:

Nobody has mentioned yet what baffled me the most. Desmond said he saw Locke banging on the hatch window, bathed in light, three days BEFORE the crash. Any thoughts?

  46. Dave Says:

Pinkk — I think it was three days before Locke got into the hatch, not three days before the plane crash. Kelvin was still in the hatch with Desmond three days earlier.

Anyone have any idea why Kelvin was painting (presumably) the map on the blast door in irridescent paint? That was another “huh?” moment… though now we know how it got there.

  47. EyeMWell Says:

Is anyone else pissed that Vincent got left behind?

    ;O)

  48. Hurley's friend Dave Says:

I can’t believe that some of you find this episode “lacking” in anyway shape or form. I think that there were plenty of answers, yet plenty of new questions that arose. Isn’t how the show can continue? A fantastic two hours of television.

  49. Maurice Tift Says:

I think Charlie’s lack of concern is important and will somehow make more sense next season. Remember, Locke also showed a lack of concern toward Charlie and Eko when they were both out there with the dynamite. Desmond, however showed concern and thought it might be unwise to go against the wishes of “a priest.” Will island healing play a part in Season 3? Charlie got out so quickly. Did he bi-locate like Walt? This show can go lots of places now.

  50. John F. Says:

Why if the Others wanted Kate, Jack and Sawyer didn’t they take them when they had them before with Locke and send Locke back? Why make them go back and then have someone go to fetch them again?

  51. Dave Says:

Maybe they see Hurley are more credible (or less credible) than Locke.
Maybe they think Hurley will spill his guts, while Locke would not have.
Maybe they don’t want Locke to know who they are.
Locke also has fewer friends in the group, while Hurley’s sort of outgoing and a networker. People like Hurley.

  52. Kira Says:

i had some of the same questions-why didn’t the others take kate, sawyer and jack when they had them in the woods? they could’ve just left locke there if they didn’t want him or blindfold him and let him loose somewhere.
Jen, i also had the kaiser soze vibe. i don’t think he’s the main man but it’s crazy that they had a ‘boss/main guy’ and didn’t know it. i told my husband the day ‘henry gale’ showed up, that he wasn’t who he said he was-could some rich computer guy as he purprted himself to be-handle the beating he took from sayid and not crumble?? i think not.
also, whoever pointed out that kelvin was sayid’s american captor, thank you-i couldn’t place him. wow. how the hell did he get there? is there a military connection?
too many connections for the plane crash to be an accident-yes, caused by Desmond, but on purpose i think.
the wormhole theory? does that mean that locke, eko and desmond may end up somewhere else?
i am always surprised by the lack of communication between the people. at least kate brought up knowing about the stage makeup and fake beards. why oh why don’t they say “holy crap! guess what i just saw?!?’ weird..
anyway, psyched for next season. thanks for all the great postings. i don’t have tivo or anything so i only get to see it once and i think i miss tons of important info. i’ll check back later for more goodies..

  53. Will Says:

I think ‘The Others’ must play by more touch and go rules than we first suspected. I mean they clearly have agendas and plans, but I don’t necessarily think it’s all clear to them from moment to moment: they’re people too.

They must have NOT wanted Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Hurley at the time of the Hunting Party. In the same way, maybe they wanted Hurley at the time of Three Minutes and changed their mind because of something that happened in between (he was the only one who didn’t bring a gun?).

  54. Starlet Says:

Great finale. But one thing i haven t seen discussed yet is that why didnt anyone find the sail boat before? They were all over that island and did not find that rocky land or the boat? It didnt seen that far from the hatch. Anyone else find that odd?

  55. ShanC Says:

I can’t believe no one’s mentioned the fake camp and the fake hatch! Where are the Others really living and why is there a fake hatch door?

I think they didn’t just take Kate, Sawyer and Jack in the woods because the Others wanted the four of them (including Hurley) to see Michael’s betrayal. It creates anger in the captives, and they also see that the Others know a way off the island.

I don’t think the Others are “lost” at all. They have a boat, they know how to get rescued…I think they want to be there. But, the whole electromagnetic thing being screwed up now is great for Michael’s escape. I bet he winds up back on the island like Desmond.

I think that Penny works for Hanso/Widmore, not that she was looking for Desmond. I think that’s a coincidence. But who knows.

I love Sayyid. He’s by far my favorite character. He’s such a hero and a good guy (I hope! Haha), I can’t wait for him to save the day!

Also, I love that the button was REAL! I totally thought it was a mind game! I want to know what is in those notebooks/who wrote the notebooks, and when they STOPPED writing in the notebooks!!!

  56. Bryan Says:

I keep reading comments about Locke and Eko being dead, but didn’t we see them in the hatch after the blast. Didn’t we see Locke tell Eko “I was wrong”. I don’t think anything bad happened to either one of them, that’s why Charlie left the hatch to go back to the beach.

It will be interesting to see how they resolve the hatch next season since obviously a lot of damamge was done to it, and the computer is smashed. Are we going to see this electromagnetic discharge 10 times a day now?

  57. WillF Says:

So how did Eko know it was so important to push the button? Do you think he saw the same thing Desmond did, that the plane crashed on the date indicated on the printout as having a system malfunction?

  58. ZombieBoone Says:

Libby’s was married to David? The same Dave that appeared to Hurley? It’s possible since the ? episode taught us that the dead can communicate with the living …

Also, Penelope (Penny) was Odysseus’ wife. She waited 20 years for him to return from the Trojan War and all those crazy Greek islands he sailed to on his way home to Ithaca.

  59. Aitor Says:

    Brilliant finale!

Ryan, what do you mean by “girl in the picture”?

Also, didn’t one of the others once mention a “she”? Could that be Penny?

  60. ShanC Says:

Just a thought: Since Pen knew Desmond was in the race, could she have planted a tracking device in his boat that couldn’t be detected b/c of the electromagnetic field and NOW can find the device b/c the field is down?? Random, but whatever.

  61. angelK Says:

I may have missed this as I didn’t watch the first season but can someone please explain this scene to me: right before Desmond turned the key he says to Locke “You save me and….so I’m going to save the world/you.” and then there’s a flashback to when he looked up that long tube and for the first time saw Locke. What happened there? How did seeing Lock save Desmond that one day he found the letter from Penny? I’m confused about that

  62. angelK Says:

WillF — the way Ecko knew about the electromagnetic field is a couple episodes prior to the season finale, there is a scene where Ecko walks into the button room and his cross literally lifts from his chest and is being pulled away from his body. That is how he knows. His metal cross literally was pulled away due to the electromagnetic field.

  63. Lala15108 Says:

I haven’t seen mentioned that Libby’s husbands’ name was Dave, and Dave was the guy that Hurley “imagined”. I too was waiting (hoping?!) that Michael’s boat would blow up. I cannot see him redeeming himself in any way at all. Hope Desmond isn’t dead, or Eko & John, but where could they be if the hatch door got blown all the way to the beach??? I also read somewhere else that the last name of the guy who was partnered with Clancy Brown’s character was mentioned in the episode featuring Rose & Bernard - does anyone remember this? I can’t wait for Season 2 to be out so I can go back over everything!!!

  64. Bryan Says:

angelK i think if you go back and watch the last episode of season 1, thats where Locke is banging on the hatch and the light comes on. I think Desmond is saying that he was going to kill himself because he felt like he was alone and trapped and hearing Locke at the hatch door made him stop.

  65. Lala15108 Says:

Love the Penelope/Pen Odysseus comment, and the “Lost” continent of Atlantis suggestion, as well as the island moving from place to place in the ocean

  66. ShanC Says:

AngelK and Bryan: desmond was about to shoot himself in the head when he found Pen’s letter in his book and THEN heard locke pounding and it made him realize he’s wasn’t alone.

  67. Kira Says:

i just remembered that ‘henry’ said to michael something like ‘we got more than we bargained for with Walt’. what did he say exactly? what does that mean and are we going to see walt’s “gifts” that they alluded to in season 1?
also, weird that libby meets desmond in a coffee shop or whatever and giving him a boat, then within 3 years (if that’s how long desmond said he was on the island) ends up in a mental institute? maybe she did work for ‘them’ and when she knew too much they kept her drugged and isolated? dunno…

  68. slightly disapointed Says "only you can put out forest fires" but also Says:

I’m just glad we narrowed down the possibilities a little bit. Some of those theories were getting out of hand. I think if they had went with half of those, there would have been riots demanding better television. Lets see, where should i get started for my first “lost” theoretical. i think the harry potter dumbledore’s not dead was a little easier to write than this. This show has so many outlying variables to be tied up that i don’t know if abrams has the stones to not get wrapped up in the money and end this thing properly and without over stretching his limits. I thought it was a real douche move to kill off ana and libby (which we all know was for the Drunk driving) and affect art over reality.

I guess i’ll start with coincidences vs. arranged meetings. We have a problem when it comes to the new information about the plane crash being an accident (there’s no way kelvin could have timed it where desmond (david hume!) would just make it back in time to have left the electromagnet running long enough to bring down the plane). All these backstories overlapping create a sense that there was purpose in that flight, and all the people were brought here in a big government/military/corporation/experimental project, but with the crash being an accident it really indicates those are all just coincidences made flashy like seinfeld where everything connected to make it more interesting. And hell, i like thinking its a small world where my psychic would come across a fake nigerian priest that i would later encounter because my psychic’s daughter’s miracle needed to be verified. IT MAKES SENSE! hahaha. alright back to business. but are we all in agreement that the plane went down on accident because of the timing issue? and that bringing people all together for an accidental dharma initiative is a little farfetched. people’s lives are spread apart too far to be brought together in a single plane ride by somebody elses intentions. ok. next topic. damn this is gonna be a long post but i’m at work and there’s nothing else to do. and i gotta write it somewhere. its rolling around in my mind always until i do.

i’ll back off theory for a second and jump to opinion. I totally think “lost” jumped the shark with hurley’s episode with dave. not exactly the story line has jumped but the drama and delving in too deep into one area when everybody is more interested in the overall picture.

i think i’ll post and then start again just so people will read more. funny how attention span works that way.

  69. Pink_Taco Says:

    angelK:
In response to your question on how Locke had saved Desmond… Desmond was sitting at the table in the hatch, with a pistol in hand. Desmond was ready to commit suicide, very angry at himself and situation. He got up and began throwing books off the shelf, sat down on the floor … and that’s when Locke banged on the entry. Locke saved Desmond from suicide by giving Desmond hope that his replacement had arrived.

  70. Dragosh Says:

hey im from romania and i would like to know when does the 3rd season start?? a very interesting finale which really pissed me off cuz i wnated to know the answers to some questions and i ended up having more questions in my mind…thanks

  71. slightly disapointed Says "only you can put out forest fires" but also Says:

    dragosh, october/september.

  72. Johnny Says:

I think that when Michael was typing to Walt in the hatch before he left, it wasn’t Walt on the other end it was the other who were looking on from the pearl and they were baiting him to come rescue Walt. Also fake Henry didn’t get captured on accident he did it on purpose.

  73. collin Says:

    Excellent episode for the finale.

Any chance that you guys will get back into podcasting for the next season?

  74. BKthought Says:

I am wondering why Locke didn’t check to see if fake-Henry Gale was telling the truth when he said he did nothing (i.e. he didn’t press the button). If Desmond could see, in the print out, that when he didn’t press the button the system captured it, then why didn’t locke check Gale’s story?

What is up with the Kate wink to jack?

  75. Mr Pants Says:

Why can’t we call Henry’s group “The Good Guys” as this is what they keep calling themselves?

  76. Dan Says:

i don’t know if anyone mentioned this yet but did Oz (the guy who picked up the yellow phone to call Desmonds exgirlfriend) look exactly like Jack but with a scruffy beard? if any of you have Tivo honestly rewind it back and take a look i am almost sure it is him. if so then all my theories have completely gone to hell because i have no idea what direction this show is going in. Let me know what you think.

  77. Mr Pants Says:

What do you mean, Hurley wasn’t in the “real set”?

Why is it the fat guy is always discounted at the first opportunity?

Having mentioned Tommy Westphal, you’d think you might make the logical connection between Tommy and Hurley. Despite the producer’s insitance that this isn’t some “all in one person’s head” show, I think there’s some merit to be found in what the metaphor or parallel of such a theory might imply. And, Hurley is the number one candidate for clues to that. They let him go not because he’s not part of whatever “real set” you’re talking about, but because … Hurley, who has issues wondering if everything is real, is going to return and probably have those same issues and who knows what he might say or not say about his experience.

  78. meg Says:

i still think that with all the cross-paths these people were assembled for a reason, not an accident. why else would we have so much back-episodes on the characters meetings? desmond’s electro-mag accident was set up to bring that plane down. another thing that bothers me…rousseau has been on the island for what 13 years??? Dharma’s hatch was set up in the 80s??the others have been there for longer than rousseau, so are they the original dharma project people from the 80’s?the ages of the others don’t jive for me. anyone have a timeline theory??

  79. Mr Pants Says:

The problem with this show, as if I need to point it out, is that there is too much room for “red herring” plots and clues. And everything can mean something if you bend your mind to it long enough.

And, every theory I’ve heard so far can easily be discounted by some event or statement that the theorist overlooks for the sake of their theory.

Even the fact that - according to what we saw last night (and believe me, until an actual FAQ sheet comes out from the production offices, I don’t believe anything this show tells me - even the fact that it looks like not pushing the button triggers some huge magnet that downs planes (but only knocks cans off shelfs) is the reason for 815’s crash. But why would there be so many other coincidences? And don’t forget that the black rock boat is wooden. And let’s say the island does move (explaining the polar bear) how does that explain no one ever noticing this largish land mass moving? You’d think someone might, eh?

I think it’s easy to show that The Good Guys (Hostiles, Rebel Dharmites, dirty bums, whatever) weren’t expecting Walt. I think Gale (Fake Gale, sorry) said something about how he surpassed their need, almost as if it was a blessing to get Walt. So?

So? Aye, there’s the rub, for every “Here’s the theory that answers all” the immediate reaction is “so?”

I need a summer vacation to regain my strength… Lost is exhausting.

  80. Dave Says:

Will — cool thought on Hurley not being wanted because he didn’t have a gun. Maybe that says something about his character.

Is it striking anybody else as odd how borderline comical the Others/Hostiles are given the ruthless efficiency with which they stalk and attack people?

  81. Jaime Roberto Says:

Desmond said he headed due west and yet he ended up back on the island. I suppose that the unusual magnetism could cause his compass to go haywire, but if his compass were going haywire, he should have noticed that the sun was not setting in the west. So either there is a hole in his story or it is more evidence supporting the moving island theory.

Also, it seemed that the Others were rather unperturbed by the bright light and loud noise. Why would that be?

  82. Julie from Chicago Says:

What was that look that Henry gave when the electromagnetic field was destroyed? The look on his face said, “Oh, crap.”, like he knew what just happened and thought it was bad. But then why did Henry try to convince Locke that the button doesn’t do anything? I wonder how this event will affect the Others’ plans.

    Dave Says:
“I wonder if Libby was a part of Dharma? She got Desmond (indirectly) to the island.”

To add to that, was Libby a plant by Penny’s dad? Maybe Mr. Widmore hired Libby (or maybe she was already a Widmore employee?) to trail Desmond and offer him the boat.

  83. STORMAMY Says:

i haven’t searched all the new posts yet, but has anyone given thought to the idea that maybe what the guys in the ice hut were alerting Penny to was not the electromagnetic (EM) failure itself, but what it caused? I don’t know anything about boats, but couldn’t some weird electromagnetic thing trigger a boat GPS (or other tracking device) to go off? Maybe Penny managed to find out the boat’s signal ID and since the EM field was disturbed, somehow that set off the boat tracking device and the ice researchers were able to locate the boat? It’s a big stretch, but just throwing it out for consideration.

  84. Lost But Wants To Be Found Says:

So, wow. Was that one hell of a season finale or what? I must say I am a tab bit disappointed that more wasn’t answered and instead were thrown more questions.

Some big head-scratchers are Charlie’s weird reaction to the hatch being blown to all-hell and his memory loss of what happend to Mr. Eko, Locke and Desmond. Could easily be explained by head injuries sustained from the dynamite blast. But I don’t think so.

Another one is the Other’s camp. When Michael is brought there it is full of activity, but when Sayid gets there to investigate, it is pristine and looks as if no one has been there for some time. There was no evidence of any camp fires or anything lit only nights before. It reminded me of the medical hatch where Claire was brought. When she was there is was active, but in a matter of weeks the walls managed to rust, and become desolate. And I must say the reveal of nothing being behind that big hatch door was shocking. I really thought something was going to be there. And like someone else mentioned, if that is not where they live; then where?

I cannot even begin to imagine what the four-toed foot is. My first thought is it is just one more thing to throw the unfortunate people who find their way to the island off. Hopefully it will not fall to the wayside like the Black Rock or the radio tower that is somewhere on the island.

And what is up with the huge bird? Our Losties encountered it during last season’s finale as well on their way back from the Black Rock.

And lastly, the plane crash. Was it all part of a master plan or not? For two seasons we have been led to believe there was some grand scheme that brought each of our beloved characters together on this island, supported by the cross-overs in the flashbacks. Now, we find that it was an accident caused by Desmond (and brilliantly so!) I do like the way they weaved Locke’s attempts to get into the hatch to saving Desmond so he could in turn save the island. Everything happens for a reason, right?

Things I am looking forward to next season:
*The development of Locke’s character now that he has once again failed. And with the electromagentic properties of the island expelled, will he be crippled?
*What project will Eko be lead to do now that the hatch has been destroyed?
*Who is really on the boat with Michael? I find it hard to believe the Hostile’s would give him up so easily.
*How the Hostiles know our Losties.
*The ominous room Walt speaks to Michael about.
*Will the other Losties try to make a break for it on the sailboat?

Wow, I just realized how long this post is!! I can’t wait to read all the interesting new theories all of you will come up with now that the show has given us some concrete answers, yet spun off into another direction. And Ryan and Jen thank so you much for providing this awesome forum. I truly miss your podcast!

  85. Dave Says:

I’m very impressed with the recent posts. People have some really cool ideas. I also have to add that having lurked on some other forums, it’s nice that we have one that is relatively laid-back and well-moderated with intelligent posters and though-out arguments.

    Enough self-congratulation.

With respect to the above comments about the Others’ camp, the actions of the Others, the four-toed foot, etc., I have a few thoughts. Part of me wants to explain that the Others/Hostiles/”Good Guys” are also pawns in an experiment, which is why they don’t leave. They also have a good thing going and don’t take kindly to new people (Rousseau, Desmond, the Losties) but can’t/don’t want to leave.

However, this line of reasoning has a few flaws. F’rinstance, the Others — or at least Ethan and Alex and Tom/Zeke — were in the Dharma-sponsored “medical hatch” doing experiment and stashing their outfits. So they’re not just pawns, they’re complicit (to borrow a 24-ism) in this.

There are also a lot of disguises and theatrics used. Henry Gale is Henry Gale, or he’s not. Mr Friendly/Tom/Zeke seems to have several beards that he uses. Mrs Clue is named Bea. The Others have Dharma jumpsuits and “hillbilly” outfits. They live in hatches and/or huts and immediately dismantle them as quickly as they create fire out of nowhere. Interestingly, there is also a giant four-toed foot and calf on the island without anything else; is this all that was ever there and deisgned to be spooky/mysterious/a deterrent of some kind? What about the fact that the pneumatic tube from the Pearl goes NOWHERE?

Trying to put it all together, it’s hard to believe that Dharma and the Others are not one and the same (though the Others could have been abandoned by Dharma and are now no longer participating in the project but living ferally, Lord of the Flied style).

As far as the Others’ camp… all we saw of it was exterior shots and the empty tent Michael was in. Who’s to say the whole thing isn’t either a ruse/red herring, or that it hadn’t previously been cleaned out before bringing Michael there? The less of their “truth” he knows, the less he could have told anyone.

Charlie’s actions were totally puzzling to me. I supopose it could be some PTSD/dissociative fugue kind of thing, but… could he have been “compromised” as well? Guess we’ll find out next season.

  86. Dave Says:

PS - Ryan & Jen, how about a *monthly* podcast during the summer hiatus? Please?

  87. Frank Says:

I have a theory, based upon her encounter with Desmond, that Libby was Mrs. Henry Gale (the real one that fake Henry buried). He was obviously an adventurer of sorts since he was traveling in a hot air balloon, so the idea that he may have also owned such a beautiful sailboat would make sense. Any thoughts?

  88. Becky Says:

I will echo everyone else by saying a hiatus podcast would be fantastic.
I have lots of theories at the moment, but as the majority have already been covered and those that haven’t make very little sense I shall leave them in my head.
However, I thought I would mention to the person who drew the Desmond/Odysseus comparison — in The Odyssey Penelope had 108 suitors.

  89. TaraTea Says:

Had a few comments to share with those who may already be able to shed a little light.
    1. Pala Ferry; the name of the dock that is mentioned in orientation to be the pick-up spot for employees after their 8-hour shift, that takes themn back to the barracks.
    2. Ecko’s cross is magnatized a few episodes back when he discovers the magnatism for himself, but when all H*** is breaking loose and it’s all flying around, his cross never lifts off his neck.

Just wondering if anyone wanted to comment on these, as I haven’t seen them mentioned yet.Maybe I missed them.

  90. False Anchors Says:

    hey all!

firstly, since i’ve never done it, thanks to ryan & jen for keeping this forum a fun place to read and post. i came in to work looking forward to reading through ryan’s notes and all the thoughts and responses.

i really liked the episode! you can’t have all the answers, so i’m satisfied with what i got.

as a side note, i also enjoyed the really creeped out look on my friends face as he watched a hanso foundation commercial for the first time. :)

ok, i haven’t had time for a re-watch yet, so someone please tell me: right after the scene where the group confronted michael and right before they were taken (darts, etc) was or was there not the telltale “Others whispering” sound?

i’ll wait to comment more until someone can clue me in, but i have this theory about more than one set of “others” that might have to be re-thought out if that sound was present. and i think it was.

what IS that sound? literal whispering? we know that it’s not just a “TV sound” (incidental music / effect) because the characters have discussed it.

  91. mobber Says:

    me thinks:
    - perhaps desmond didn’t crash the boat. he awoke on the shore. the boat was okay all along
    - it’s always bothered me that the lost crew never walked around the island to ensure they were, indeed, on an island.
    - i really think libby was an insider for hanso. i bet her former job is up on hansocareers.com
    - what would keep walt and michael from circling the island and picking up their crew? bomb? hopefully sayid sees them at sea. i’d rather be on desmonds boat anyways…
    - there were multiple people in biohazzard suits that rescued desmond.
    - Inman was training desmond all along. he was disappearing to communicate with the others.
    - the boat didn’t need any repairs. perhaps Inman tricked Desmond outside the hatch on purpose. perhaps Inman really wanted 815 to crash…
    - what was Desmond’s book? i bet it relates to the story…
    - funny how the others/”hostiles” refered to themselves as the good ones
    - jack, kate, & sawyer were all known by the otheres to be hostile. that’s why they were choosen. henry gale will probally add sayid to the list of people that’ll give them trouble
    - hurley was needed because of libby, but henry knows she’s dead so he told hurley to return

ahhh…my head hurts. gotta stop and get back to work.

  92. Lost But Wants To Be Found Says:

Something else I can’t seem to stop thinking about is not-Henry’s comment about his group being the “good guys”. Now I know what he says cannot totally be trusted, but if what he says is in fact true, who are the “bad guys”? And have we seen them yet? Any ideas?

  93. Daren From Delaware Says:

    “Slightly Stupid” oh… I mean Slightly Disappointed…

Michelle Rodriguez has given multiple interviews in which she states that her original contract was for one season and that’s it. She said when she agreed to do the show her friends/agents warned her not to get involved in a long term TV show because it can pigeon hole an actress into being know as strictly television. A Lost writer/creator not J.J. Abrams also gave an interview to the Lost magazine in which he stated that they had a meeting with Michelle Rodriguez and her agent a couple months back in which the produces asked her if she would like to stay on the show for “X” amount of more seasons. She refused and said they should go on with the original plan/contract which would therefore be the original plot that was developed for her character. J.J. and crew wanted to keep her on the show just so it didn’t look like they were killing her off because of her DUI.

Most of your post just picks apart the show in a negative way!
My Question to you is, do you really like show or not? And if you do, why do you feel that it is necessary only to point out the negative stuff you noticed or the inconsistencies in the plot.

David Hume states reality is based on your perceptions so if you perceive everything negatively your reality will inevitably be the same!

  94. Amy Says:

TaraTea — We totally noticed that bit about Echo’s necklace (or lack thereof) as well…

False Anchors — yep! The trees whispered “Elizabeth” — the name of Libby/Desmond’s boat and thus Libby’s full name…. Hell if I know what it means, however. Anyone remember what the trees have whispered before?

mobber — If the three taken were taken because they’re “hostile”, how would Sayid and his torture antics not qualify him? (I won’t press this point, as surely Sayid will save the day…though he was mysteriously absent from the montage during the bright light)

Dickens’ “Our Mutual Friend” was the last full book Dickens wrote before he died, according to Wikipedia. (Drood was never finished). What is the significance of this book or title? Think Dickens was in on this? (Kidding, of course. Mostly.) Wikipedia’s description centers around money, mercenaries, and lists a cast of characters headed by “the absent center o the story” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Mutual_Friend). The money focus follows Penelope’s “I’m rich and persistent” comment and the absent center is Hanso?

I think the point about Desmond’s full name referencing another philosopher is an interesting one… Because of Desmond’s accent, I understood Inman’s name to be “Calvin” which adds a theologian to the list (Locke, Hume, others?). Then again, I could be stretching this a bit far.

Watching the finale was exhausting as each detail may be hugely significant or completely inconsequential…

  95. pinkk Says:

I was thinking that the hostile’s ‘camp’ may be just a set for the losties to find and draw wrong conclusions from. We know they have the ability to come and go from the island on the old boat. Maybe they actually live somewhere else and travel to and from the island. This might explain the age discrepancies that somebody mentioned. The members of the ‘hostile team’ could be replaced as time has passed(the last 13 years).

  96. Mr Pants Says:

Isn’t this the second or third time Henry has called his group “The Good Guys”?

But, to me, it always sounds like he says it in an ironic sort of way, sort of “Well, according to everyone else, we’re the good guys, ha ha ha.” Not in the usual “We’re the good guys” sort of way.

  97. Mr Pants Says:

I hearby vote to call Henry’s team by the name they call themselves - “The Good Guys”

Not “hostiles” or “Rebel Dharmites” or “Others” or whathaveyou.

Let’s show some respect people. They are, after all, the good guys.

For more on the whispering throughout LOST, check out http://www.lostlinks.net/whispers.htm. I imagine they’ll have a transcript of last night’s noises soon.

Thanks Becky, I didn’t remember Penelope’s 108 suitors. The numbers are everywhere!

  99. Dave Says:

Pinkk — I am not certain that the “Good Guys” (it’s just not as catchy as “Others” and also no in accordance with Loacnian psychology ;) ) can just “come and go.” They have a boat, but I’m not sure that boat can get away from the island (similar to Desmond’s boat). Although the notion of the Pala Ferry suggests that it is used to cross a body of water (although technically I suppose it could just be from point A to point B on the same coast… and BTW “pala” apparently means “protector” per the Wikipedia) and so maybe there is another island?

Mobber: Desmond most certainly didn’t crash his boat. How he got to shore is a good question though. I also saw multiple yellow suits, not just Kelvin/Calvin/Inman (as in inside man?).

I can’t imagine that Libby’s husband is the “real” Henry Gale. His name is Henry, after all. But could her husband be the “fake” Henry Gale? I also wondered if he is the same “Dave” from the psych facility. I would LOVE to find out how Libby went from the coffee shop with Desmond to an inpatient psych facility to a clinical psychologist… I think there’s a lot more to her character and I am just not sure how it will get pulled in, unless we start getting flashbacks from the Others.

  100. red herring Says:

With all this talk of fake Henry Gale, I can’t help but wonder who the real Henry Gale is and how he ended up on the island. It is especially weird that he crash landed on the island by way of hot air balloon!!! But it also brings me to one thing that I keep getting stuck on, which is the character’s names… There are so many allusions to literature(i.e. Sawyer, Gale, Penelope?) and to great philosophers (i.e. Locke, Hume, Kelvin/Calvin?)but then there are many characters that don’t seem to have a the same symbolism? Henry Gale is interesting because he was the fake wizard of oz. In other words there was no real head honcho/wizard. It was all just a normal guy behind a curtin (oh yeah, and he left the mysterious land of oz in a hot air balloon). Similarities??? The teachings of Locke and Hume are very relevant to the dynamics of the show.
So is there significance to the names or are they just another red herring?
Dave- I agree about “the others” and Lacanian psych. I didn’t know anything about Lacanian psych until last night when I checked out the latest Hanso Foundation website and saw it under one of the job descriptions. I researched it and was totally floored by the relevance to the show… check it out!

  101. Connie from Alaska Says:

Maybe Dave and Libby were working on Hurley as a team in the mental hospital AND on the island. Dave could have been real after all.

  102. Dave Says:

Connie, Dave was not in the Polaroid taken of Hurley at the mental hospital. Presumably that was not doctored. There’s no Dave.

  103. Connie from Alaska Says:

Wasn’t Henry Gale Dorothy’s uncle. I don’t remember what the wizard’s name was in his “Kansas” life. Or maybe Henry Gale was the wizard in the book, but they changed him to the traveling performer in the movie…anyone?

  104. False Anchors Says:

    thanks amy and (hahaha) zombieboone!

my thought beforehand (this pertains to the whispering business) was that perhaps there were more than one set of “others” - sorry, i can’t buy into the “good guy” thing just yet. :)

to me, the others represented by people like not-henry, ethan, and tom seem a different breed than the barefoot folks wandering through the jungle, like the people that eko and jin saw while looking for michael. thus, or so i had thought, maybe there were more groups on the island.

in accordance with that theory (which seems much less likely), i thought perhaps there was a disease of sorts on the island and perhaps the people that couldn’t be inoculated/cured were the ones running barefoot in the jungle.

the rip in inman’s biosuit and his subsequent discarding of it would seem to suggest that there is/was no disease and that it was just a mechanism to keep desmond hatchbound.

BUT.. what about rousseau’s (sp? the french gal) team? she told sayid that they got sick. does that mean that there IS an issue after all?

also, while i’m thinking of it, let’s touch on the hatch door that would have hit claire during the electromagnetic freakout had bernard not intervened: was it THE hatch door, or just A hatch door? it strikes me as odd that THE hatch door (from the swan) would have found it’s way up into the air while everything else was being pulled toward the hatch.

    trivial? maybe.

  105. Beachybroad Says:

I have been a lurker in the rafters but am trying to sort some things out…The old litereary references, the genre of music, the hot air balloon, the amount of time between echo and his brothers parting, are all giving me the feeling of timelessness. There seem to be many crossovers of an “old-time” feel mixed with the present day. What this means I haven’t a clue, just thought I’d throw it in the mix.

Walt did say that things were not what they appeared, so he obviously has information on the others/good ones. Why then are we all so surprised when the village is a facade?

It seems like nothing is as easy as it appears!!

One big lurking question I still have (ok really more than one but…) is who is Desmonds girlfriend engaged to? Her father said in his attempt to bribe Desmond that she was now engaged….which lostie is/was her fiance!!

Love the thread - Miss Ryan and Jen’s pod cast

    See you around the Beach!!

  106. Connie from Alaska Says:

Wow, good point about the hatch door, False Anchors. Besides, we know that the Swan hatch door wasn’t attached (we saw it laying on the ground next to opening when Eko crawled out) so it could not have been blown off in Eko’s TNT blast, which is where I assumed it came from.

  107. jim Says:

OK, I will admit that this is a wild shot out of left field. But I was thinking about the statue fragment, the four-toed foot. I’m tempted to think that it’s just a deliberate false clue, but then I started thinking about the idea that the island is “not where it’s supposed to be”. Didn’t the legend of Atlantis include the story that the technologically advanced culture of Atlantis destroyed itself by designing a dangerous weapon that essentially blew up the land mass? Could electromagnetism have had something to do with it? Are our heroes stranded on some fragment of Atlantis that has drifted to another part of the world? Boy, I think I’m going off the deep end here. But, maybe not…

  108. dzt66 Says:

Okay, wow, there are a TON of theories on here. I LOVE reading all of them. I copy and paste my favorite for my personal reference (my brain doesn’t work as well as all of you - I have to steal your thoughts!).

Regarding Henry Gale - I could not find that “Henry Gale” was the wizzard behind the curtain in the movie, but I did a little google research and found that Dorothy’s last name in The Wizzard of Oz is Gale and her uncle’s name is Henry - props to who first thought of that (how do you guys come up with this stuff?). My husband said that Dorothy had three uncles in the movie and in her dream they were the tin man, the lion, and the scarecrow. If that is true, I wonder which one of those three characters her uncle Henry played. Character reference for Henry Gale? Time lapse reference? I hope not.

  109. Jen Says:

Charlie is eeeeviiiiil. Mark my words. He’s been evil since day one. Everyone is going to be thinking a long time from now what Michael did and they’re gonna be angry and just when he’s disappeared from memory, BAM! Charlie is going to hand Aaron over to the Others, or worse. His complete lack of concern on the beach after the explosion cements what I’ve thought all along: he’s creepy and evil.

I think Hurley was sent back to the camp because he is trustworthy and has no agenda. Mr Pants–there is just no evidence that any of this is taking place inside Hurley’s imagination. In fact, I think “Dave” disproved that theory. We might have made the Hurley/Westphall connection if it made any sense. I think we can trust the writers when they say that that isn’t what’s happening. There’s no evidence of it, and I can’t think of what the Others (or Good Guys, or whatever) would gain from exploiting Hurley’s issues. There’s no reason to think that they are even aware of his issues.

I’m sure that notHenry is being perfectly serious when he says that they’re the “good guys”. I’m sure they believe they’re on a noble mission, and who’s to say they’re not? We don’t really know what they’re up to. They took the kids and the “good people”, but where are they? What have they done with them? We have no evidence that they’re in danger. We imagine they’re up to no good, but we don’t know that for sure.

Wait, so if the two dudes at the monitoring station were speaking Portuguese, then they might be Brazilian. I just now thought of that.

  110. Gabus from Brazil Says:

    JimboFromMontaukAFS,

Connie from Alaska is right: those guys are speaking portuguese. They’re Brazilian, although their accent was a bit strange.
The actors must be Brazilian raised on the US or child of Brazilian parents.

  111. Gabus from Brazil Says:

    Oh, Jen is right too.

  112. William Says:

Can anyone please tell me what Penelope said in her letter? i looked for transcripts EVERYWHERE but none to be found for the finale .. :( it said something about only nedding one person to survive? i missed it so please tell me if you know! Thanks.

  113. William Says:

p.S sorry for the bad grammar I’m kind of in a hurry.

  114. Jen Says:

Basically P said she’d wait for Desmond. She said “all a person needs to survive is one person who loves them, and you have me”.

  115. dzt66 Says:

I have watched every episode of Lost, but I have never been one of “you” - obsessed with all the details and figuring it out - I am just not smart enough for what you guys come up with… BUT I am obsessed now! I have been online all day reading blogs and looking at stuff.

I have a question. Does anyone know what the dam is? Am I imagining it, or do they talk about releasing the dam? Am I losing my mind on that one?

Also, I need your opinions… I want to buy a Lost t-shirt and my favorite one so far has the numbers on the front and the back says, “Every 108 minutes I press the button.” But what if there is no button next season?!?!? Will my t-shirt be outdated in a few months? Obviously the hatch is going to have some issues if it even is still around. Should I get a different t-shirt? This also makes me wonder - what DID happen to Locke and Ecko?

AHHHH - I hope I don’t dream about Lost again tonight like I did last night.

  116. Slappy Says:

I suppose that Charlie probably has a concussion could be an explanation of his behavior.

  117. Nuckinfuts Says:

OK - - I’ve been reading this for an hour or so so my brain might be a little scrambled…. I just feel I have to put something on the table…well…2 things to be exact….

#1. Did anyone else think it was just a little odd after writing what appeared to be 100’s of letters to Penny ( think that’s her name ) that when she finally tracks him down outside the stadium that night that Desmond spends about 40 seconds with her, doesn’t say that he wrote her when she asks, and w/ the smallest explanation takes off on his run? I can understand him wanting to get his reputation back or whatever, but still…just a little wierd to treat the woman he loved like trash after apparently turning down her dad’s money and then not seeking her more by himself….OK - - just sort of struck me funny…did he fear his life would be in danger for being with or being seen with her because dad was so powerful and he wanted to earn her dad’s approval first or just take his money by winning the race and then be w/ her and still have to fear his wrath? …OK…now the real question…

#2. Jack’s “Plan”. Jack basically asks for Hurley,Kate,Sawyer ( and we know off in the distance somewhere are Sayid, Jin & Sun ) to trust him…that he has a plan and that they must believe in him that he wouldn’t have led them out there knowing Michael had possibly turned to the dark side so to speak and that by the time they must have agreed to his plan we next see them at the tube disposal place…whatever that shall be named…but we must now also agree that whatever plan Jack had was discussed right there in front of Michael after his confession…and Jack says that the “Others” or “Good Guys ( bull….I’m sticking w/ “Others” at this point, although I’m not convinced that there are not even more “Others” ( Dharma, Hanso, etc. or “Others Squared” ) ) must believe that they trust Michael and that they are not suspicious of his ill-conceived plan to take them to the group. OK…so….perhaps Michael is now ( and I admit that after the betrayal this may be a stretch ) part of Jack’s overall plan…after all…when they saw the smoke on the beach ( presumably Sayid ) and get all pissed at Michael they have already discussed the plan…and even though Jack/K/S/H get darted and knocked out Michael (holding his bag) did not…the “Others” trust him —a little— I guess you see where I am going here….perhaps Jack’s wink to Kate and nod to Hurley meant that they would stick to the plan even though Hurley was released and Michael would drive off and then turn towards the smoke and meet up w/ Sayid….having the power boat ( I mean come on…how much gas could that thing hold to get to safety ) could have some guns on him now and together w/ Jin come back to rescue them right away…plus Walt would know more about where they had been hiding….I gotta believe that Michael has a little good left in him and really didn’t mind the island, but wanted Walt back and got too screwed up for a while trying to do that….then if the plan works they will have the boat ( sail boat ) and directions to get to……………probably back to the island.

    Any thoughts?

  118. Carol Says:

Did anyone notice the ’stonehenge pilars next to the 4 toed foot sculpture????

  119. Havasupi Says:

I was struck by the similar appearance one of the Portugesse guys ( the final scene) had to Jack. I even thought he was played by Matthew Fox.

And since “Henry Gale” seems to be the boss… I think it was no accident he was caught.

  120. Purdy Says:

Ryan mentioned the idea of the island moving around. That’s like moving mountains. But if the island has a powerful electromagnetic anomaly within it then it may be able to interact with any place on Earth through the bands of Earth’s electromagnetic field. No need to move. The island can link to anywhere on Earth under….certain “conditions”….

Was the hatch “terminated” as Desmond turned the key? Did the hatch “blow up”? Or did turning the key simply reverse the polarity of the machinery being driven by the electromagnetic anomaly in order to shut everything down? In doing so all metallic objects being attracted to the source would suddenly fly away from the source. That would explain seeing big metallic objects flying away (like the hatch door with QUARANTINE” written on it) while people like Charlie are still walking around with only a hearing problem left over from the dynamite.
Such a major electromagnetic incident may also create new links to….who knows what? Don’t you love it.

  121. Lee Says:

Maybe i have missed something here, but i have seen a few mentions of the polar bear.
I thought the appearance of the polar bear was something to do with Walt reading the comic book in the 1st series, which had a picture of a polar bear in it, and michael got mad with him and threw it in the fire.

  122. Thomas Says:

@Lost in the North West: Let me clarify some things for you.

You said “… Sayid finally getting in some prayers to Mecca (by the way how did he know what direction it was?)?”

For Muslims, the intention of praying towards Mecca counts instead of scientifically measuring out angles to be certain. In Sayid’s case, if we are to believe they are truly lost and have no idea of what ocean they are in, then he can pray in any direction and his prayers will count. This is supported by all schools of thought in Islam.

You said “… apologetic attitude of Hollywood towards Islam”

I was rather confused by your post since it took a very elitist and condescending tone at this point. It sounds like you want Hollywood to portray Muslims as terrorists so people like you can be happy with your constipated view of the world. The fact is that out of the 1+ billion on this earth, many do pray and most all are not involved in terrorism. Hollywood is hardly apologetic towards Islam and enjoyed fanning the flames of a stereotypical Muslim for years. Ask anyone on the street the first thought and description of a Muslim that comes to mind and you’ll have your proof. I’d ask that you refrain was from making such sweeping statements. Sayid prayed… big whop-di-doo. My fellow Americans disappoint me when they say these things.

  123. meg Says:

can’t resolve the power boat being handed over to michael so freely. imagine you’re on an island with limited reach to the rest of civilization and you GIVE the boat away. makes me believe that the others have many different forms of transportation that they would not miss one little boat! unless they know that the boat can never leave the island’s EMP,and it’ll soon be back.

  124. Dave Says:

Lee — the polar bear was in the comic book… which was Hurley’s (Walt found it and was reading it). Which I think is why a lot of theories initially focused on this all being in Hurley’s mind, or Walt being able to “apparate” things that he sees.

Nuckinfuts — I was similarly perplexed. My best guess is that Desmond didn’t say anything to Penny because he didn’t want her to get upset with her father and cause a rift. Essentially, no good could have come of it aside from romantic melodrama value. He had already decided to go around the world to take Mr Widmore’s money and save his reputation; to tell Penny would either A) make her not believe him, B) piss her off with respect to her dad and create even more friction, or C) lead her to try to dissuade him from the race, which became a mission for him. That’s the only explanation I can come up with as to why didn’t even say something like, “I tried to write to you,” even without impugning her father. He also was led to believe (maybe incorrectly given the picture on her nighttable) that she was engaged and getting married.

I also don’t know what Jack’s plan was. There was a look on Michael’s face after all was said and done at the Pala Ferry of being, well… underwhelmed. Like, “I killed two people and pissed off all these folks who I depended on… and this is IT?” Anticlimatic. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure he’s ecstatic to get Walt back, but I agree that maybe he’ll realize that getting off the island is not all it’s cracked up to be.

Also — Jin and Sun have Desmon’d boat. Michael has the Pala Ferry (which is the boat that the Others used to attack the raft last season). Do the Others even have any other means of aquatic transportation? Can’t Michael take the boat and meet up with Jin and Sun and bring it over to the beach?

As for Charlie… I agree he’s creepy and losing it, though I can’t tell why. One minute he’s surly and nasty and the next he’s desperate for approval. I wonder if his odd reactions after the explosion aren’t the result of a concussion (as put forward above) or PTSD.

  125. Vnahum Says:

    Check THIS out!

I Googled “4 toes statue” and a book by Thomas Love Peacock came up on Amazon. The excerpt says, “”The place is quite a wilderness,” said Squire Headlong: … Here you see is the pedestal of a statue, with only half a leg and four toes remaining: there were many here once.”

I have no idea what the book is about but Ray Bradbury wrote the introduction.

I’m going to check this out.

  126. Vnahum Says:

    Book is named HEADLONG HALL.

  127. Vnahum Says:

Also, did anyone see Mr. Ecko carving what looked like 9:22 Revelation on that stick. I looked it up but Revelation only goes to verse 21. Hmmm.

  128. Reg in WA Says:

Here is a link to Revelation 9, in the King James Version.
    http://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/kjv/rev009.htm#9:21

While clearly it is not a script for the show, there are all kinds of resonant images in the chapter. The key to the bottomless pit, lots of smoke images, something about the people who weren’t killed not repenting of their murders, sorceries, fornications, and theft. All kinds of material to over-analyse…

  129. Jeff Says:

To throw in another theory about the 4 toed statue…..I believe we will come to find that the “Great Man”, presumably Mr. Hanso, had only 4 toes either from birth or an accident. And the statue was of him and built back in the 80’s maybe when Dharma was at its peak. Although the Atlantis and HEADLONG HALL theories are interesting and need to be fully explored as well…..

As for Penny and the Brazilian scientific equipement monitors…..I think that Penny was following Desmonds progress in the race around the world and when he went missing and launched an exhaustive search for him and his boat. I am unsure as to if the boat had a homing device on it or a GPS locator on it at all or if the race required one be installed or even if Penny had one secretly installed, but I kind of doubt any of that. Anyway, as her means ( $$$$$ ) allowed for extensive search capabilities, the only thing that was ever reported back to her was an abnormal ElectroMagnetic anomoly at about the time Desmond went missing. Since that was her only lead, she set up the monitoring station ( or stations ) to look for it in hopes that it will lead her to Desmond. The Brazilians missed the time when the system failure brought down flight 815, but now have it located and fixed since Desmond turned the key. Now we get to wait and see what Penny does with the information. Does she mount a rescue? Does fake Henry Gale get back to the Hatch site and repair the magnet somehow to re-hide the island?

    Jeff from Tulsa

  130. Tawl Says:

    Superb finale!!

My theories after reading all the prior posts.

The LOST Producers have said that Lost is not in a time warp. How about a warp across dimensions (including time and space), because of the super magnetic properties of the Island?

How could super magnetism create such havoc? Read about a World War II event called The “Philadelphia Experiment.”
    http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq21-1.htm

The “Good Guys” seem to know the future, and plan accordingly.

The fact that the prior lives of the Losties overlap, and the magic Numbers are everywhere, suggest that the crash was not a coincidence.

Turning the key may reset or reversed the magnetic properties of the Island. And the Portuguese crew must have seen it happen before.

Why, if the Others wanted Kate, Jack and Sawyer, didn’t they take them when they had them before with Locke and send Locke back? Because the “Time” was right. If you know what will happen, you wait for the right moment.

‘Henry’ said to Michael something like ‘we got more than we bargained for when Walt joined us’. I wonder if Walt has the power to slip thru alternate dimensions that have been created by “incidents” on the Island… like not pushing the button.

“Not pushing the button” may have occurred on past occasions (reality is then reset) and reality is slowly reduced to only those events that interrelate to just the Losties. Imagine a copy machine, copying the same thing over and over, until only the basic part of the original image is left. All of the original details are gone. But each new irregularity from one copy will be copied onto the next and become exaggerated.

Does the “Other’s” ferry travel across dimensions, rather than water?

Maybe the Island doesn’t move, “outside reality” does.

Hurley, Jack, Kate, and Michael have a plan. Sawyer has been left out. Each give Jack the “look.”

    and finally…. Big Bird is “Him” - I couldn’t resist :)

The Pala Dynasty was big on Buddhism.

Lord Kelvin (if not Calvin) has some connections with electricity, so it’s maybe a good name for the electromagnetic hatch.

The blown hatch bothers me because it wasn’t closed, it had already been blown and was lying beside the opening. For it to have been blown up in the air would have required total obliteration of that area, and Charlie with it. But it’s probably artistic license.

  133. Elizabeth Says:

I just started watching LOST a little after the second season began. I’m absolutely hooked.

I’d like to know… If the Others are the ‘good guys’ then is there another group or abstract sort of beings (like the smoke) that are the ‘bad guys’? Cause how can the passengers of flight 815 be evil when they crashed by accident/ don’t know what half the stuff is on the island.

Also, just another thought… was-Henry Gale isn’t the big boss. He’s pretty high up and likely to use his influence on those lower than him. But what’s up with him saying that he couldn’t go back.. ‘He’ would kill him? Was that just talk? Maybe Henry and his Other friends are being manipulated by a bigger guy, so they actually are the ‘good guys’.

    ?

  134. leezar Says:

Yep, great finale. Answered just enough questions and left a good deal more still hanging.

I thought one of the key lines of the episode was delivered by Desmond, as the importance of pressing the button was all coming together for him. He said something along these lines to Locke: “There is no purpose, there’s no such thing as destiny but you saved my life once and now I am going to save yours”.
So, there is no purpose, it is all random and yet even the random has significance. We have been seeing examples of “interconnectedness” all throughout the season and yet this scene with Desmond and Locke seemed to drive it all home.
Locke saving Desmonds life, unwittingly, by bashing on the hatch door and screaming and of course Desmond, unwittingly giving Locke hope to continue his efforts getting into the hatch and furthering his “belief” in the island simply by turning on a light at just t
